| Greetings! | I am reminded how beautiful life is this week; I became an Oma for the third time! Wow! My beautiful granddaughter, Janae, was born on Wednesday. Janae means "God's precious gift" and she is! To hold one who is so innocent, so full of possibilities, and such a miracle is a reminder of how cherished our gift of life really is. It evokes in me to live life to it's fullest, to take risks, and to just be me, because there is only one me (some would say 'Thank goodness' to that!). I encourage you to do the same, love your life, love yourself, and be the best that you can be. We only get one chance to make the most of who we are and to make a difference in this world. Celebrations! |
| Yoga Pose of the Week - Hero's Pose |
Hero's Pose (Virasana) is wonderful for the ankles, knees, and hips. It's a first-rate pose to practice everyday because it aids in healing arthritis of the knees, restoring the arches of the feet, heals gout and heel bone spurs, as well as realigns the legs. It does takes daily practice and much resolve.
Be kind to yourself when practicing this pose ~ go slowly. B.K.S. Iyengar suggests that you sit in this pose on one or two telephone books everyday and each day take one page out, that is how slowly you want to go in healing these vital tendons, ligaments, and joints.
Click on the picture of this article to take you to my YouTube video where I will give other alternative ways to sit in Hero's Pose. |
| Mantra | |
A mantra is a sound or phrase that aids in the concentration of meditation. It is a Sanskrit term and literally means 'instrument of thought'. Here you will find a suggested mantra to use during the week. Just repeat it whenever you need a lift.
I love and approve of myself. I am loving and lovable. |

Nutrition Prescription - Turmeric
| Turmeric is one of the top spices that you can add to your diet. In 2007 the Advanced Experimental Medical Biology stated "Curcumin has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-cancer activities and thus has a potential against various malignant diseases, diabetes, allergies, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, and other chronic illnesses". There are SO many benefits to turmeric that I can't possibly list them all here. Every site I looked at listed more of them. Here is one site that lists 20 Health Benefits of Turmeric to help get you started. Google search to find even more! Even NIH currently has 24 on-going studies to find all the bonuses this spice has to offer. Another advantage is that it can help with so many maladies without the side-effects that drugs usually come with!
The property of turmeric that makes it so miraculous is curcumin due to its anti-inflammatory traits. It's taste can be a bit off-putting to some, so if you don't want to use the spice itself you can now buy both turmeric and curcumin as supplements. When adding it to your food also use a bit of pepper as well, pepper helps your GI tract to absorb the turmeric better. My husband and I put it on our eggs for breakfast every morning. I love the taste and the orange/yellow color brightens the dish! Here is a link to delicious recipes as a way to add this valuable spice to your meals: Turmeric Recipes - Home Cooking. | Ponderings - Enjoy Life! |
Many years ago I was eating a Vegan diet. This is a lifestyle where you don't use any animal products in your life, including not using leather, drinking milk, eating eggs, etc. I came to it because I wanted to apply Ahimsa (Sanskrit for 'non-violence' - one of the yamas of yoga) into my life in my eagerness to embody the full yoga experience. What I didn't realize was that this way of eating required sound knowledge of how to get all of my essential vitamins and minerals, and an awareness of my body so that I could feel it effecting my health. Because of my dearth in either of these at the time, I slowly began to fall into a deep depression with thoughts of suicide becoming more and more predominant in my mind. Luckily, I discovered that I was deficient in the vitamin B12 which can lead to severe depression. My homeopathic doctor gave me syringes of B12 that I administered to myself and soon I returned to my old optimistic self.
I learned much from this dark period in my life. One: I am someone who needed to eat meat (it is full of B-vitamins) for the health of my body and mind. I also had to wrap my ego around the fact that this was a natural thing to do and that it is the way of the world. Something has to die in order for something else to live. Two: Life is sacred and that there was only going to be one Debbie Jensen-Grubb in all of time. I learned to treasure my life and the importance of being authentic, no facade, no pretense. I adopted the what-you-see-is-what-you-get attitude. Like it or leave it. I've never been a conformist, though I had a propensity to try to please others too much, but now I had an even deeper appreciation for just being myself and standing for ME by creating compassionate boundaries and being OK with that.
Three: I realized how fleeting life really is and that I had better enjoy it now. It was up to me to make my life the best that it could be. As I awakened to this new truth I realized that I was most joyful and at peace when I was doing yoga. I had been co-teaching a class with my mentor Gail Wenocur (one of the heros in my life) and had all ready taken the yoga teacher training to become a certified teacher. So I decided to take the leap and commit wholeheartedly to what I loved doing most. I quit nursing and became a full-time yoga teacher.
It was tough going at first and I often wondered what in the world I had done (others thought I was crazy too, leaving the stable profession of nursing for one that was so unconventional and financially insecure) but I never had any regrets. Yoga saved me. It gave me a healthy body, it helps me immensely in calming my mind, and finding peace in my heart and life. My wish is to help my students realize that they are one-of-a-kind too! I encourage the to love themselves, to listen to their inner voice, and to see all the blessings in their life.
I know that I am not alone in my story. Everyone faces challenges in their life. So share your story, all of the bumps and bruises. Be a hero to someone in your life and to yourself. It is how we can help each other through this wild and wonderful wilderness called Life. Through relationships we learn, change, and grow to become the best that we can be. We must be brave enough to take that step, whatever that step is, to follow our path so that life can be what it is meant to be...Enjoyed!

I leave you with this quote from Charles Dickens "Reflect upon your present blessings-of which everyone has many, instead of your past misfortunes-of which everyone has some".
Enjoy!
