Greetings!

I have long been wanting to create a newsletter to connect with my students and now here it is, the first edition.  Finally!  Within it you will find the yoga pose of the week (which we will also do in class), a nutritional fact (food IS our medicine), and a thought to contemplate (which coordinates with the Daily Om of the class).  I do hope you enjoy this first edition...the musings of my Inner Voice to yours.  Namaste.

Lunge - Utthita Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Raised Horse)
Lunge
Lunge
The Lunge is the most important pose in Yoga in my opinion.  It focuses on lengthening the spine, opening the groin, strengthening the legs, and expanding the chest.  It is our feature pose of the Summer session so we will be doing it at least once in each class.  An important tip is when first beginning to practice the Lunge pose it is best to use blocks under your hands so that you don't pull a groin muscle, this also allows more room for you to step your back foot forward again.  For printable step-by-step instructions on Lunge click on this link:   Lunge

Mantra
A mantra is a sound or phrase that aids in the concentration of meditation.  It is a Sanskrit term and literally means 'instrument of thought'.  Here you will find a suggested mantra to use during the week.  Just repeat it three times whenever you need a lift.

I trust the process of life.  I am safe.

Rib-Tickler of the Week - hee hee
There are two rules for success:
  1) don't tell all you know

Nutrition Prescription - Water
Water is the foundation of our bodies.  It is THE most important item that you can give your body to keep it functioning properly.  Water cannot be substituted with anything else - not tea, soda, juice, certainly not coffee, and not even coconut water.  As a liquid only water can provide us with a healthy, functioning body.  It regulates our temperature, lubricates our joints, eliminates waste, and protects our spinal cord.  The brain itself is made up of 75% of water! It even helps us lose weight!

To calculate how much water to drink each day weigh yourself and divide that number in half, that is how many ounces of water you want to give to yourself.  Follow this link to a Hydration Calculator.

Drink the best water you can.  Purchase a good water filter to attach to your kitchen sink and a couple of glass water bottles or a safe plastic bottle (check out this article to learn how to find a safe plastic water bottle:  Which plastic water bottles don't leach chemicals?) and begin to carry your own water with you.  In this way we can help the planet as we help ourselves by keeping all of those bottles out of the landfill!

To flavor up your water just add some fresh fruit, herbs (like mint), or even cucumber to it!  I usually drink my water the same day when I do this otherwise it can get bitter or cloudy.  When making a whole pitcher add the fruit and let it chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. Simply refreshing!

Ponderings - Free Your Mind
Have you ever wished that you could fly?  The feeling of freedom, of soaring through the air with the wind through your hair, just the image is exhilarating!  You don't have to jump out of an airplane, float in a hot air balloon, or go hang gliding to get this feeling (though they would all be fun to do!), you need only to close your eyes.  We have a whole world within ourselves, one that is just as big and interesting as the one outside of ourselves.  We can go anyplace our imaginations can carry us...unless we are bogged down even inside of ourselves.

Notice what you are thinking.  Most often we don't know what we are thinking.  When you watch your thoughts you may be surprised to find how many negative thoughts you might have about yourself, your life, or others.  This can lead to stress, fatigue, and anxiety. There is hope!

Think of your mind as a computer.  It only feeds back to you what you put into it.  You can begin to regain mastery over your mind by replacing all of the ancient ways of thinking that don't serve you anymore.

To do this begin to notice how you are thinking whenever you are angry, frustrated, anxious, or any other negative emotion, follow the emotion to see what thought is attached to it.  This will allow you to mentally remove yourself from the situation.

The next step is to have a positive thought or mantra to insert into your mind (computer) to negate the pessimistic thought.  The one I use is "I am getting better and better everyday" or "Life is getting better and better everyday".  This begins a positive cycle and I begin to think of all my blessings and throw as many positive thoughts into the mix as I can.  I also have friends that I call upon if I can't think of anything that will help me out with this game.

Soon I DO begin to feel better, lighter, more free!  I begin to see the beauty that is around me in the people I see, in nature, and in life.  I begin to fly again and see the big picture of how truly blessed I am and this brings in more joy as well!

This mental game has helped me on numerous occasions and it happens faster and more easily each time.  Now almost as soon as I begin to think negatively I notice it and stop it in it's tracks!

You too can clean out your mind, start by creating your own mantra, replace the cyncial / defeatist thoughts with it, and count your blessings.  Before you know it you'll begin to fly!

Well, that's it!  My first newsletter!  I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it!
See you in class!
Namaste,
Debbie
