           Forecast for Holiday Shopping

The Holiday's are supposed to be the most wonderful time ofholidayshopping the year, but this years Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping Poll results are in and only a third of those surveyed expect to be happier this holiday season than last. It seems everyone's number one concern is still finances, and people are watching how much they spend and what they're buying this year more than ever. Of those surveyed 15% plan on spending more money, but one-third plan on spending less money on gifts this holiday season. It's all about finding good deals, with 44% of people saying getting a good deal this year is more important than it was last year.

Advertisers Reamain Calm Over NBA Lockout

lockoutFor advertisers the NBA pales in comparison to the NFL so there hasn't been too much sleep lost over the current NBA lockout. The core demographic that tune in for professional basketball games  are young males and there are plenty of other programs for those viewers to be recaptured. There is much less panic then when the NFL games were on the chopping block, even though all of November's NBA games have already been lost.  Another reason for the relative calm is the optimism at least half the season will be salvaged. Ad spending in the NBA is heavily back-loaded to the second half of the season and playoffs, when ratings and fan interest surge. TV advertising for NBA games on ESPN, TNT & ABC was over $600 million last season, with about half of that spent just during playoffs.  Advertisers really won't feel the loss of the NBA until after the Super Bowl is over.

Tips for Holiday Social Good Campaigns

giftgivingThe holiday's are approaching quickly and it's that time of the year when generosity is up! People give more money to charities toward the end of the calendar than any other time of the year.  There are many different types of social good campaigns. For example, one of our clients - the Chicago Wolves - have implemented a campaign where $5 of every ticket sold through ticketmaster.com is going to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. You just need to enter the promocode "HUNGER" for the goodwill to be activated. Another client of ours - the American Lung Association in Greater Chicago - sees a nice spike in cars being donated to their 1-800-Lung-Cars hotline to beat the end of the year tax deduction. Here are some tips for running your social good campaign this holiday season.
  • It's the holidays so make sure you do something festive.  Be innovative and tie your causes into the holidays.
  • Make sure to be respectful of all, not everyone celebrates the same holidays.  Find smart ways to incorporate relevant holidays, or ways to incorporate all holidays
  • Don't pause your organization's core campaigns; keep sight of your long term initiatives during the Holiday's as well.
  • Be Consistent.  If you've had success before with a holiday campaign, don't stop. Just tweak it a little from year to year with new ways to make it better.

Is a Google Cable TV Service in the Works?

googleTVGoogle may be planning to expand their reach to the $150 billion-per-year pay television market. After a recent software update for Google TV there has been speculation that Google plans to take on cable giants such as Comcast. Google TV software can be installed on cable TV boxes or directly on the television to bring online shows and channels form the Web to the living room. If Google can provide the same high quality programming for potentially a lower cost, competition will sky rocket.   The Wall Street Journal reported that Google already plans to pilot a video and phone service in Kansas City starting in early 2012. This would put them against companies that have expanded into "triple play" of communications: cable television, telephone and high-speed Internet. Google continues to move into new areas, as they try to steal some of the share for the U.S. television industry.  Companies like Comcast and DirecTV will fight hard to keep their places.

POLITICALLY INCORRECT?

Sharon Bialek, the woman who accused Republican Presidential Candidate Herman Cain of sexual harassment has connections to three Chicago radio stations.  From 2001-2004 she worked as an account executive at Tribune Co. owned WGN-AM (720).  After that, she worked as a nontraditional revenue director at CBS Radio's former WCKG.  She also reportedly has been seeking employment at Salem Communications news/talk WIND-AM (560).  She reconnected with Cain at a Tea Party rally hosted by WIND last month.  Cain has denied the accusations put against him by Bialek.  A close friend of Bialek, WIND afternoon host Steve Cochran, believes Bialek is telling the truth.  "I can't see any scenario where she would come forward like this unless she felt she absolutely had to," Cochran said.
