 | Is News/Talk the future on the FM dial? |
In Chicago within a matter of days, (2) frequencies on the FM band (formerly playing music) have changed to a spoken word format. WBBM-A Newsradio 780 is now simulcasting on FM 105.9 (formerly Fresh) and WWWN FM News 101.1 has taken over for the Alternative music format WKQX Q 101. In the '80s and '90s, the News/Talk format basically saved the AM band as many music listeners flocked to the FM band. Now, 20+ years later...are we seeing another shift? Younger music lovers have been downloading their music on iPods opening the door for Talk to move to the FM. |

Pandora beats some Top Radio Stations for Young Listeners |
Not only are younger music listeners going to their ipods but they are also going to a personalized, streaming juke box called Pandora. In New York, Pandora garnered a 0.7 AQH rating among 18 to 34 year olds. They beat out terrestial stations Z 100 and Hot 97. Please note the numbers were calculated by Edison Research from data provided by Pandora. The ratings were even higher in Chicago, L.A., San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, where Pandora gained a 0.9 rating in the 18-34 demo. Don't expect Pandora though to get hit with a ton of advertising dollars. A lack of D.J.s or on-air personalities will impact revenue...as those elements are considered key to building trust with audiences. |
