Do you find it curious that it's taken us this long to release a video called "Writing Lyrics"? One also might expect that it would come from our lyrics guru, Pat Pattison, but this time it comes from Steve Seskin (also our lyrics guru). One could argue that most of our videos shed some light on lyric writing and the long list of "related content" associated with today's video makes this evident. Some of the videos touch upon the nuts and bolts of lyric writing, while others address more subtle and advanced concepts such as phrasing and prosody. In this video, Steve focuses on the right combination of imagery and emotion in a good lyric.
This Week's New Video
Writing Lyrics: In this "Writing Lyrics" lecture, Steve talks about combining imagery and emotion to get a powerful lyric. The right combination of these two elements gives listeners the sense that the song was written about them - which is why so many great songs do this so well. There's no true formula for how much imagery vs. emotional language to use in a song but it is possible to get a really good sense of what works.
