Hi everyone. We hope all is well with you, and we are thrilled at the thought that your new years resolutions just might involve spending a little more time with us at Songwork.

Over the next month we will be releasing a grouping of videos that touch heavily upon emotion and songwriting. How can you create more emotion in your songs - harmonically, melodically, rhythmically and more? Well, you'll be hearing a lot about that from Bonnie Hayes and Randall Williams, as well as Steve Seskin, Pat Pattison and Steve Leslie. So, stay tuned and let us know what you think!

And of course, please enjoy this week's videos.

Thanks!

Theory with Bonnie: Part 7: Chord Functions in Keys

Instructor: Bonnie Hayes

When you say, I - IV - V, what does it all mean? It means functionality and feelings! Well, it turns out that each of the big chords in a key (like I, IV & V) can create some pretty predictable feelings. Those feelings are really what help us define the relationships between chords in a diatonic scale. It's pretty cool to realize that all the math of music theory lines up so well with our emotional responses to chord progressions. Listen to Bonnie Hayes explain basic harmonic functions present in all western music, in terms of function AND feelings.

Hearing Progressions in Other Songs

Instructor: Randall Williams

In this case, stealing is just fine - even good to do! When you hear an inspiring progression, it's great to be able to capture it, learn it and use it for your own songs, or to be able to recall it spontaneously for any number of situations.
