Jewish Fund for the Future presents "Tak For Alt" (Thanks for Everything in Danish)
The Story of Holocaust Survivor and Educator Judith Meisel
Judith Meisel was a shy housewife married to the educational director at Beth Shalom Congregation, where Halina Wind Preston was a teacher who spoke widely about her 14-month survival in a Polish sewer and who encouraged Meisel to tell her story as well.
"She was my role model," says Meisel, who now lives in California. "There was no one like her, in elegance and brightness and beauty."
Preston died in 1982, but 30 years later her legacy lives on. Her story was partly told in last year's Oscar-nominated movie "In Darkness." And her husband, George Preston, himself a survivor of the Nazi camps Auschwitz and Buchenwald, endowed a lecture series in her memory.
At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, Judith Meisel will return to Wilmington to present her story in the 10th Halina Wind Preston Memorial Lecture on the Holocaust, at the Siegel Jewish Community Center. An award-winning hour-long documentary about Meisel, "TAK FOR ALT: Survival of a Human Spirit," will be shown and Meisel will answer questions and sign copies of the DVD afterward.
The program is free and open to the public.
