Learn more about Federation and how we are Improving Our World... TOGETHER.
Greetings!

Good morning. Thank you for the positive response to last week's J-VOICE. We will continually seek community feedback in an effort of constantly improving our communications.

Community Connections, a mentoring program for University of Delaware students through Federation's Young Leadership Division, held it's kick-off event at Home Grown Cafe in Newark on Tuesday night. It was amazing to see more than 40 students "speed network" with community mentors. Special thanks to Lauren and George Danneman for chairing the event.

Please see the upcoming events in the community on the left column. There are synagogue open houses this weekend, Jewish Family Services of Delaware's Reel Talk next Wednesday and the Candidates Forum next Thursday.

We wish our local lay leaders who are traveling to New York on Sunday for the International Lion of Judah Conference a safe journey. Congratulations to community leader and Federation Past President, Suzanne Grant, who will be receiving the Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award, recognizing extraordinary women who have set a high standard for philanthropy and volunteerism.
Israeli Desert Aquaculture:
A New School of Fish

At a time when ocean fish populations are threatened worldwide, Israeli fish farmers are developing innovative new technologies and breeding methods that are revolutionizing their industry.

Faced with managing scarce water resources in a desert ecosystem, the Israeli government has supported the solutions of kibbutzim-and more recently, those of "Dagim," the Fish Breeders Association-to promote healthy, environmentally sound, and profitable fish cultivation. Today, a close look at the country's thriving fisheries and available ponds reveals a rich history and a rapidly evolving, yet pragmatic business. The result has been new patents, improved fish quality, increased trade, and, perhaps most importantly, a comprehensive mapping of Israel's water use and untapped reservoirs.

Laugh A Little

As we prepare for the Days of Awe, it is easy to focus on tears and fears and not the joy that the holiday also invites. One of our central characters, Isaac, is named precisely for the experience of laughter. The first child born Jewish was named for happiness. Isaac was a much-awaited child, the product of much anguish. And his breathless fate on Mount Moriah that we read on Rosh Hashanah was also a time of anguish. And yet, he is still named for joy, perhaps because he was a source of relief and a sign that impossible things can be possible: an important message as we face any new year.
