Unsung Hero
Maimonides? Heard of him.
Yehuda Halevi, Ibn Ezra? Names sort of ring a bell.
Hasdai Ibn Shaprut? Who?
The name Hasdai Ibn Shaprut doesn't quickly come to the minds of most when asked to name famous Sephardic Jews, but it should. It can be argued that had it not been for the efforts of Hasdai Ibn Shaprut (915 CE - 970 or 990 CE), Maimonides, Halevi, Ibn Ezra, and countless other Jewish intellectuals might not have had access to the foundational Jewish knowledge and nurturing which made them the great scholars and intellectuals they became.
