January 21, 2011 / 16 Shevat, 5771

Greetings!

Tu B'Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar
 - celebrated this year on Thursday, January 20, 2011 - is the day that marked the beginning of a "New Year for Trees." This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of watching students from the Albert Einstein Academy participate in a Tu B'Shevat seder with their parents at the Siegel JCC. It was wonderful to see this gathering of study, song and celebration of the great miracle of trees.

Last night I listened to Rabbi Vogel liken the Jewish people to trees and how our strong roots have enabled our culture to continue to grow and flourish.

Shabbat Shalom.
