Counselor's Corner
Who is my Counselor?: There have been a few changes in staffing this year. Please use this guide to determine who best can help you.
9th A-K - Sandra Sumrall ssumrall@hsv.k12.al.us
9th L - Z - Mary Cagle mcagle@hsv.k12.al.us
10th - Mary Cagle mcagle@hsv.k12.al.us
11th - Sandra Sumrall ssumrall@hsv.k12.al.us
12th - Allison Hardt ahardt@hsv.k12.al.us
Postsecondary - Sheri Crigger scrigger@hsv.k12.al.us
Counselor's Corner on the GHS Website - Please take the time to check out the "Counselor's Corner" on the GHS website - http://www.hsv.k12.al.us/schools/high/ghs/counselor/index.htm. Some important sections of interest for all grade levels - Postsecondary Calendar, Opportunities for All Students, Current Topics of Interest, College Planning, and Scholarships.
GHS General Info- If you would like to talk/meet with your child's teacher(s), please contact them directly by either phone or email. Contact info can be found on the GHS web page, Huntsville City Schools web page, or by calling Grissom's front office at 256-428-8000.
Semester Grade Calculations - Credit will be awarded for each subject at the END of the course. Grades are calculated with a 20-20-10 rule. Each 9 weeks grade counts 20% and each semester exam counts 10% of the total yearly grade.
Abesences and Homework - We are happy to collect assignments for your child if he/she is absent from school due to illness, funeral, etc. On the third day absent from school, you may contact the grade-level counselor to make this request. We will ask the teachers to send assignments to the Attendance Office to be picked up AFTER 2:30 pm. Please be aware that we cannot request assignments until at least the third consecutive day of absences. It is a good idea for your child to get the phone number of at least one reliable person in each of his classes. If he is absent for only 1 or 2 days, this friend can help provide information on missed assignments.
Driver's Permits and Licenses - Students applying for a driver's permit or license must have a "proof of enrollment" form. These forms can be obtained from Mrs. Crim, Registrar, in the front office.
Preparing for College Early - We've been hearing lots of questions about how to best prepare for college in the early high school years. It's not time to search for scholarships yet, but there are things your child needs to be focusing on in the next couple of years - like developing good study habits, exploring his interests, and considering different careers. In addition to the college planning information on the Grissom website, ACT offers some helpful tips on this topic at http://www.actstudent.org/college/checklist.html.

Tigers Care
The motto of PTA is Every Child, One Voice. Here at Grissom, we know Tigers Care. There are students in our city who need us to be their voice. We have an opportunity to help some special needs students get funding for an accessible play ground. Please take the time to go to the Parenting Magazine link and vote for AAA. Go Tigers! Membership Matters
PTA and PTSAs both exist for one purpose; child advocacy. At Grissom High School this is realized in many different ways. We attend school board meeetings and advocate with our board and superintendent. We provide scholarships to students. We facilitate seminars for parents. We lobby state and federal legislatures for education legislation and funding. We provide supplies and support for our faculty and staff. We connect with other service organizations and corporate donors on behalf of Grissom. We need your support to do all this. Membership matters; your support matters. Please stop by the memebership table tonight and join us in support of our school. |

Reflections 2011 - 2012 .
Reflections is a National PTA program that provides students an opportunity to express themselves and receive recognition in the arts. Students may submit entries in the categories of dance, film, literature, music, photography or visual arts. This year's theme is "Diversity is..."
In the past years, Grissom High School Reflections entries have done very well in city and state competition. A Reflections award is a nice accomplishment to list on a college application. At the state level, the program also offers a $500.00 scholarship to the top senior participant. At the national level, the scholarship winner receives $5000. Three years ago the state scholarship was awarded to a Grissom student who finished in the top tiers at the national level. I would be happy to help any interested seniors apply this year. The deadline will be in late October, early November. Please contact Cathy Ehlert (dcehlert@comcast.net) for additional information. |
