| Greetings! | |
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! Just about two years ago, in partnership with Districts 106,109,112,113, and the private schools in those communities, Parents. The Anti-Drug, sent out our first monthly email discussing how we can keep our children drug and alcohol-free. Many of you may be familiar with us and some may be receiving our emails for the first time. We felt it was important to re-introduce ourselves and welcome those of you who are new to us. |
|
Who we are | |
We are a community organization comprised of parents, local government, school officials, clergy, and health providers who have come together because we are concerned about the health and success of our kids. Supported by an executive board which consists entirely of parents from our communities, our mission is to generate conversation and provide accurate information about alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use in Bannockburn, Deerfield, Highland Park, Highwood, and Riverwoods.
We know that it is not an easy task as there are many challenges that parents face regarding the issue of underage drinking and drug use. However, through our messages and our partnerships with the schools and other community agencies, we hope to empower other parents with the knowledge and the resources they need to overcome some of those obstacles. Why we do what we do | |
While we came together for our heartfelt concerns, we have used local and national data to help drive our initiatives. We have found that teens who consistently learn about the risks of drugs from their parents are 50% less likely to use drugs and alcohol. As parents, we have influence!
We learned that:
- Alcohol is the leading factor in the three most common causes of death for teens: car crashes, homicides, and suicides.
- Alcohol and drug use can cause young people to develop social problems, have poor judgment, get into trouble, do poorly in school and experience failure in achieving lifelong goals.
- Underage drinking can cause permanent damage to a teen's brain and increases the risk of addiction to alcohol.
