While most teens seem to be aware of the dangers of drinking and driving, many of them mistakenly believe that those same dangers do not exist when it comes to smoking marijuana and driving.
Did you know that in Illinois, drivers under the age of 21 face a zero tolerance policy meaning they will lose their driving privileges if any trace of alcohol or other drugs is found? They can also be charged with a DUI if they have any trace of other drugs or have a blood-alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or above, or in excess or .05 with additional evidence proving impairment.

Here are a few facts to share with your teen to "drive" home the message:
- Marijuana affects alertness, concentration, perception, coordination and reaction time, many of the skills required for safe driving and other tasks. Marijuana use can also make it difficult to judge distances and react to signals and sounds on the road.
- While alcohol contains only one chemical, ethanol, marijuana contains over 400 known chemicals including some of the same cancer-causing substances found in tobacco smoke. In fact, one joint can deliver four times as much cancer-causing tar as one tobacco cigarette.
- Marijuana is riskier than you think. It can limit our teen's achievement in the classroom, on standardized tests and in the future.
