Cahaba Tractor Donates a Kubota for Calera Pumpkin Patch Hayride

Kubota at Pumpkin Patch
For the second year, Cahaba Tractor has donated a Kubota tractor to the Pumpkin Patch Express in Calera for use with the hayride. The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum hosts the family friendly event every October. Riders take the train from the museum to the Pumpkin Patch where they can choose their own pumpkin, ride the hayride, and enjoy other activities, such as games and inflatables.

James Garnett, museum President, is thankful for the use of the tractor. "We are very appreciative of the donation from Cahaba Tractor. As a non-profit, it helps us tremendously," he said. "The hayride is a big part of the Pumpkin Patch. We need a good tractor that can hold up and with this one, we don't have to worry about it ever breaking down." He added, "We certainly hope to continue our relationship with Cahaba Tractor for many years to come."

The Pumpkin Patch Express is in it's third year and is expected to carry over 4,000 riders this month. The event is held every weekend during the month of October. Special charter trips can be arranged for schools, as well.

The museum also hosts the popular Santa Special and North Pole Express beginning in late November and many others throughout the year. For more info about the events or to become a volunteer, visit www.hodrrm.org or call (205) 668-3435.

Caring for Your Lawn
During Fall and   Winter

Fall is finally here, but don't pack away those garden tools just yet. Good lawn care doesn't end when your grass goes dormant for winter. Proper preparation now will ensure that your lawn has a strong, healthy root system for the cold weather season ahead.
Here's some simple steps to help your grass look its best next spring:

* Rake the grass to remove any lingering thatch. If the grass is severely compacted and contains thatch beyond 1/2 inch thick, aerate your lawn to protect it from disease and fungal problems during the winter months. Core aeration opens up spaces within the soil to improve airflow and receive nutrients from winter fertilizers and rain.

* Apply slow release "fall" fertilizer or broadleaf pre-emergent treatment to control weeds and feed your lawn's root system through winter and into early spring. Be sure to select products that are specifically for "winterizing." These products will have a higher potassium and phosphorous ratio to stimulate root and rhizome growth. It's best to fertilize early in the season, before the end of October, to keep the grass from continuing to grow as temperatures drop to freezing and possibly causing frost damage.

* Plug any bare spots with a grass plugger and topdress, if needed, with compost or sand.

* Overseed your lawn to maintain a greener lawn and inhibit weed growth. Winter rye grass is favored for its sturdiness and ability to grow rapidly in a wide range of soil types during cooler temperatures. In the South, annual winter rye grass is recommended since it will die out as the temperature climbs in the spring and your lawn begins to emerge from dormancy. Note: Due to the clumping nature of rye grass, be sure to apply evenly by hand or using a spreader. Water grass and keep fairly moist to help it germinate.

* Mow emerging grass to a height of 2 1/2 to 3 inches. Rake or mow with a mulching blade to keep falling leaves from smothering newly grown grass.

Caring for a lush, healthy lawn is a year round job, but the end results are worth the efforts.

Cahaba Tractor has all the implements you need, from spreaders to mowers, to make your work easier. Right now, you can purchase a Kubota Zero-Turn Mower and make no payments until April 2012! Come see us today!
Fall is a great season with almost picture perfect weather. Let us help you get the job done, so you can get out and have some fun!

You Might Be A Redneck Gardener if:

You mow your lawn and find a wheelbarrow.

A half moon reminds you of your fat husband pulling weeds.

You think a chainsaw is a musical instrument.

You move your refrigerator and the grass underneath it is yellow.

Kudzu covers your arbor.

You don't water your front yard rather than mow it.

You know how many bags of fertilizer your car can hold.

You've ever cleaned your house with a leaf blower.

You empty your trash when you have enough to fill the pickup.

You can amuse yourself for more than an hour with a hose.

You've been cited for reckless driving on a riding lawn mower.

You move your weed-eater to take a bath.
