Alabama Construction Industry: On the Rebound?
Reading the economic forecast headlines is like riding a roller coaster. Up one day and down the next. Although confidence in a recovering economy is on the increase, recent political trends and natural disasters have kept that confidence in check.
Cautious Optimism? While there is cautious optimism nationally, Alabama has good reason to be hopeful. Several economic reports, including one by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGCA), show that Alabama is pacing ahead of the rest of the nation in several areas, including an increase in construction activity. Local suppliers, like Cahaba Tractor, have planned well-ahead for the predicted growth with a well-stocked supply of commercial equipment.
A 2011 first quarter report from the Alabama Business Confidence Index states that Alabama businesses are projected to outperform the nation this year. The economic growth index for Alabama has increased 7.1 points in the first quarter of this year and 9.6 points from the fourth quarter of 2010. That's great news for business.
A Step Ahead The AGCA also released figures showing that Alabama will be among only 30 states to see an increase in construction employment with a gain of 1,600 jobs, the state's second strongest employment increase since 2007. Quite an improvement from last year when Alabama surpassed the national jobless rate in the construction industry by 3.2%.
Federally funded stimulus projects helped move the industry ahead somewhat since early 2009. The growing popularity of energy-efficient green or sustainable building has also provided new production revenues. Additionally, construction businesses were forced to become more innovative to stay afloat in a flat economy.
Slow and Steady Wins the Race By 2015, Alabama is projected to add 3,350 construction jobs to the Birmingham metro area, which includes all seven counties, according to a report by Woods & Poole Economics, Inc., a Washington, D.C. based independent firm. The dramatic increase in construction job gains will make it "one of the strongest sectors for growth."
Henry Hagood, president of Associated General Contractors of Alabama, said that members of the group are seeing a definite increase in activity. Projects that were put off by businesses during the economic downturn are now coming to life. In a survey from nearly 1,300 construction firms nationally, investments in new construction equipment is projected to increase. This is good news for manufacturers and retailers like Cahaba Tractor.
Words of Wisdom One thing is certain: business and consumer confidence is improving, especially here in Alabama. The construction industry, one of many sectors hit hard by the recession, is slowly, but surely, on the rebound. As businessman, author and motivational speaker Robert (Bo) Bennett so succinctly put it, "As sure as the spring will follow the winter, prosperity and economic growth will follow recession." A timely and hopeful quote for a season and an industry known for growth and renewal. |

Meet Our Staff...
Bryan Gamble, grandson of Jim Gamble, and third generation employee began working with his dad Dale Gamble, at the company-- unofficially--about 21 years ago.
Bryan would go to the store on Saturdays and Dale would put him to work sweeping and cleaning up after which he'd reward Bryan with $20 for his work.
When Bryan turned 15, he enrolled in the schools co-op program and was put on payroll. Starting out as a helper assembling and preparing equipment for delivery, he has worked in "just about every area of the business" ever since.
He credits working in the various positions with helping him learn more about the whole business.
So, just how is it working with family? Bryan's response, "both fun and challenging."
He keeps things in perspective, stating, "I know my place in the pecking order, so there are seldom any disputes." AlI kidding aside, Bryan is quick to state that he and Dale work well together. "Working on the farm with Dad helped prepare me for the business relationship," he stated. "He and Papa (grandfather Jim) gave me a strong work ethic. They push me to achieve my best.
That strong work ethic is evident in the success of Cahaba Tractor today. "Papa always said build a relationship with your customers, first, and they will remain a good customer." Bryan continues, "It's the personal relationship that we build with our customers that sets us apart from other businesses like ours. We enjoy the relationships and friendships we build."
Bryan credits all the employees for the success of Cahaba Tractor. "The staff we have believe the same way about our customers. That's what makes us successful." He adds that the employees are much more special to the business, "We don't have employees, we have family here. Even though we may not be blood-related, we're still family."
That thought also carries over to customers, who talk about feeling like they are part of a family at Cahaba Tractor. Bryan agrees. "Cahaba Tractor is defined by our service and relationships that no one else has. We always go the extra mile for our customers."
When Bryan is not working his usual six day work week, he enjoys time with his family and hunting, whenever he can.
