Meet Our Customers...
Tom Haney: Meadow Lake Farms
Tom Haney

      Gentleman Farmer

These days, Tom Haney, a self-professed "gentleman farmer," is enjoying life in retirement. He's happy to be spending more time talking "tractors" and less about things like "term life," as he did during his more than 27 years in the insurance business. His focus now is on doing what he loves: visiting with the grandkids, maintaining his large property, bee keeping and gardening, as well as hunting and fishing. With all of these hobbies, he needs some good, reliable machinery to take the "work" out of playtime. More...

     Overseeding Your Fields for Spring

Step 1 - Buy the best possible grass seed:

When overseeding for Spring, the first step is to purchase a good quality grass seed. Most prefer to use a perennial Rye grass seed with a minimum blend of 80% perennial rye to 20% annual rye seed or a triple blend of perennial rye. Inter-seeded blends tend to allow for greater flexibility and perform best in most areas. To find a top quality grass seed, look for an NTEP rated variety. The National Turf Evaluation Program (NTEP) independently evaluates and rates grass seed brands that have been specifically bred for superior green grass color, disease and insect resistance and drought tolerance. The better the grass seed, the healthier and better looking the lawn.

Step 2 - Prepare the soil (To overseed an existing lawn)

Mow grass as short as possible. Loosen the top one quarter inch of soil in bare spots. Rake up debris and dethatch dead turfgrass tissue. Level off areas where excess water collects. Be sure to use existing topsoil; any added soil may have weed seeds. Fertilize the bare spots after overseeding with a starter fertilizer.

Step 3 - Plant grass seed

Spread the seed evenly by hand in small areas. Use a hand or lawn spreader or a mechanical seeder in large areas, such as the Land Pride All Purpose Seeder sold at Cahaba Tractor (see below). Apply approximately 16 seeds per square inch. Too many seeds too close together causes seedlings to fight for room and nutrients, resulting in weak or thin grass in these areas.

Step 4 - Cover seeds

Lightly drag the grass seed bed so no more than one quarter inch of soil covers the grass seed. Cover the grass seed bed with a good starter fertilizer and seeding mulch to hold seeds in place and retain moisture.

Step 5 - Water often

Keep grass seed bed moist to enhance germination. Water lightly, and at least once daily, until the new grass is two inches high. Water new grass regularly to keep roots moist.

Step 6 - Do not apply weed control products too early

Do not apply weed control products to the grass. Delay the weed control application until the grass seed has germinated and you have mowed the grass at least 3 times.

Cahaba Tractor carries the Land Pride All Purpose Seeder, which can do most of the work for you. It is the perfect tool for seeding over established lawns and will not disturb dormant grasses. The All-Purpose Seeder is fitted with crab action spiked rollers that can be easily angled for more or less aggressive de-thatching or soil cultivation and seedbed preparation. Spring mounted rear rollers offer maximum down pressure, better spike penetration, and seed to soil contact. The precision grass seed cups and various seeder widths provide for highly accurate seed delivery around landscape obstacles and over uneven, hilly terrain. The large seedbox capacity allows for greater productivity in less time.

With the Land Pride All Purpose Seeder from Cahaba Tractor, you only need to purchase the grass and mow the lawn. All the other steps are taken care of for you, and in half the time.

This month, Cahaba Tractor is offering the Hollow Spreader, FREE ($450 value), with the purchase of the Land Pride All Purpose Seeder.

At Cahaba Tractor, we have everything you need to lay the groundwork for a great spring season and a successful year. Come and see us today.

Meet Our Staff...
Allen Morris

Allen Morris, Cahaba Tractor delivery driver, has gained a reputation and a most appropriate nickname since he began working with the company almost seven years ago.

He was dubbed the "Northwest Mountie" by Cahaba Tractor Service Manager Carl Gamble. Just like his namesake is known for always getting his man, Allen is known for always getting his tractor.

Allen most enjoys delivering tractors to first-time customers.
"A lot of customers we get here have never been on a tractor before, so my job is to give them confidence in how to operate the tractor and make them feel comfortable with it." His professionalism and good customer service skills put customers at ease. He attributes these skills to his many years working as a manager in the grocery industry and his time with Cahaba Tractor.

When he is not delivering, he helps out in the service department assembling and servicing tractors. "It helps me learn more about them, so I can better explain to customers how they work."

Allen's work day can begin before the sun rises and end long after sunset. "It really just depends on what needs to be delivered, where and when. We do whatever it takes to get the job done."

He is proud of the level of service customers receive, from all employees, when they walk onto the Cahaba Tractor lot. "We all watch out for the customer. If someone needs help, we're there."

When the "Northwest Mountie" is not working, he enjoys time with his wife, five kids and two grandkids. He also loves playing chess with friends and his eleven year old daughter who competes with her school. And when finished working on his wife's to-do list, he likes to fish and play basketball.

You can remember the fertilizer rate, seed population, herbicide rate, and yields on a farm you rented ten years ago, but cannot recall your wife's birthday.
