Winterizing Your Tractor
Winterizing your tractor is an easy and important step in regular maintenance. Not only will it save you time when spring rolls around, but it will also save you money on unnecessary and costly repairs.
First, give the tractor a good cleaning. Remove the deck and blades and have the blades sharpened for next season, if needed.
Inspect the tractor thoroughly paying close attention to hoses and parts. Check the owner's manual to see what parts need lubricating. Grease the fittings and check all nuts to see if they need tightening. You may want to spray some lubricant on the underside of the tractor, once dried, to prevent grass and debris from sticking in the future.
Start the tractor and let it run briefly to warm the oil making it easier to change. Change the oil and replace the oil filter. Consult the manual's directions for replacing the air and fuel filters. If the air filter is made of paper, it should be replaced.*
Check the anti-freeze. Make sure the anti-freeze/water ratio is correct for the winter temperatures. Most tractor manufacturers recommend new anti-freeze every two years.
Fill the tank with gas or diesel and add a fuel stabilizer to keep it fresh and prevent deposits from forming over the winter. Start the engine and let it run for about five to ten minutes to let the mixture enter the carburetor or injection pump.*
Check the exhaust system and brakes. Exhaust leaks can vent dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to an enclosed cab.
Make certain the heater, defroster and both windshield wipers are in good condition and fill up with winter-grade washer fluid.
Check air pressure in tires and add air, if needed.
If the tractor is going to be used throughout the winter for chores like plowing, the maintenance is finished. The next step applies only to tractors that will be stored for the winter. Park the tractor where it is to be stored for the winter. Remove the battery, charge it and store it in a warm place inside or charge it periodically during the winter months. Be sure to clean the battery post.
Tractors, like all motorized vehicles, require routine maintenance to continue running smoothly. Knowing how to winterize a tractor helps owners get the most out of these useful machines.
