Get Down To Earth at Birch Stores...
Birch added the 'Down To Earth' line of organic soils, fertilizers, soil testers and more to retail stores last year and continues to stock the popular products. Did you know the products like Miracle Grow actually deplete the soil of nutrients...DTE fertilizers feed the soil - the 6# box is the best value on the market. Another bonus...the box is 100% recyclable and can be added to your compost.
Learn how to save money and care for trees, shrubs, hanging baskets, roses, blueberries and more with DTE - be sure to come to Summer Kickoffs at Birch's Anacortes and
Bellingham stores in early June.
Some tips from DTE pros:
- grow grass in a sunny location with good drainage.
- mow high to prevent scalping the grass - scalping allows weeds to grow. Slightly taller grass shades the soil surface, conserving water.
- water once a week deeply with 1" of water (tip: place a cup in the watering area to get a visual of the amount of water the grass receives).
- use an organic fertilizer, such as Down To Earth's 'Tree & Shrub Mix'- once in the Spring and once in the early Fall (note: chemical fertilizers, like Miracle Grow, kill off beneficial bacteria and encourage thatch).
- add calcium lime once per year and dolomite lime every 3 or 4 years to keep soil pH neutral (moss loves acidic soil, shade and poor drainage).
- remove excessive top growth and exposed roots with a power rake (or thatcher).
- aerate all lawns once or twice per year to allow air, water, fertilizer and roots to penetrate deeper into the soil.
- after aerating, add fertilizer, spray with compost tea and top dress with half an inch of very fine compost.
