Practice in Actions, Words and Thoughts                            September 2010

Greetings!

This is a very important moment for yogi-nomad: it is the time to thank all the people like you who have made yogi-nomad's journey possible so far!

Like you, one thousand people became "friend" of our FaceBook page in our first year and a thousand more in the last six month; like you, ten thousand people from 133 countries, visited our website in the last height month; like you twenty people decided to join us for the Teacher Training starting on October 4th and to share this six weeks journey in Nepal, "land of the seeker".

In response to this trend and to frequent requests, Yogi-nomad has applied to Yoga Alliance to be accredited at Level II (RYS 500) and designed an advanced teacher training program starting June 2011. The venue and program details will soon be on the website.

Again, thank you for your continuous practice, presence and inspiration.
See you soon.

Sarva Mangalam,

The Yogi-nomad Team

"Practice in actions, words and thoughts
"
Episode three

"Practice in actions,
PYS 2-31 "Practiced Universally and without exceptions, Yama becomes great disciplines" a good example of virtue ethics
words and thoughts" we have heard or read this commandment but I went on asking myself: Are my actions more important than words because they have direct impact on the physical reality around me and that word can be easily brushed away?  Are thoughts really contained within the space of the mind? Nothing indicates priority from actions to thoughts and in the end we have to address all three. But is it possible to practice in actions or words without practicing in thoughts first?

Unless we have control over the process, most of our actions are automated, linked to first sensing (the experience) then feeling (good or bad) and finally reacting (desire, repulsion) and this chain-reaction is preconditioned by our previous experiences.

Our thoughts are creating the world around us, the same world in which we will later on decide to conduct actions: can we therefore conduct free, "enlightened" actions before we have purified our mind of negative patterns of thoughts?

Try the following experience: give small group of people a one-minute talk about anything. Explain it is a test and repeat the talk a second time. In the first talk repeat mentally while speaking "they are stupid, they wont understand anyway" and in the second talk repeat mentally "they are great people, it is nice to share". Now ask them how they have perceived the two messages: their response will leave no doubts about the power of your thoughts.

I was perplexed that despite the large resources invested in international cooperation, we were obviously not making a difference. War, hunger, poverty and epidemics were just as before. What could possibly be wrong? I had to resign from all my functions and look from a distance to realize: until we change ourselves from the inside, our actions will have no long-term impact. Unless we transform the deep structure of our mind, our words and action are still driven by mechanisms that we are not aware of. Even when conducted with apparent good intention, our intentions sometime just do not go deep enough for us to impregnate our actions of the virtue required to make it durable.

Obviously any purification process goes through various level of refinement. Each new round of practice will remove ignorance of the previous state and will bring us toward more clarity. What is important to remember is the axiom of virtue-based ethics: it is the Sattvic qualities of the performer that will permeate and make the action performed effective.
