Engineering Begins on $6 Billion Vegas-Victorville Rail Link
The U.S. Department of Transportation gave the green light to developers of DesertXpress to begin preliminary engineering for the $6 billion, 186-mile high-speed rail project that would link Las Vegas with Victorville, Calif. The approval, known as a record of decision, is the final step in the arduous process of preparing an environmental impact statement on the controversial project.

California company Calera is working to engineer a cement that cuts down on carbon dioxide emissions by power plants. The process uses smokestack emissions from a nearby power plant to form a limestone precipitate that results in cement that has the same properties as Portland cement. Calera says the process will be affordable, and the company is expanding production and preparing to receive feedback from the concrete industry.

Major progress was made this week on the Goetz Rd. bridge in California's Riverside County when workers added a concrete deck to the project. The deck is about 7 to 10 inches thick and required roughly 380 cubic yards of concrete. Utility work next month will include several water and cable companies running utilities under the bridge, and work is on schedule for completion in December.

Contractor Comedy
Mitch is working at the construction site, pushing a plank through the buzz saw, when he accidentally shears off all ten of his fingers. He manages to drive himself to the nearest hospital's emergency room.
The doctor takes one look at Mitch's bloody stumps and says, "Oh my gosh, reattachment surgery on so many lost digits has never been attempted before! But don't worry, I'm the best surgeon in the hospital, give me the fingers, and we'll get to work."
Mitch says, "I haven't got the fingers."
The doctor looks flabbergasted. "What do you mean, you haven't got the fingers? It's the 21st century! We've got microsurgery and all kinds of incredible techniques. I could have put them back on and made you like new. Why didn't you bring in the fingers??"
Mitch says, "Well, Doc, I couldn't exactly pick the freaking things up, now could I !"

Dividing backyard space into outdoor "rooms" is a growing trend in landscape and hardscape design with the biggest focus being on the outdoor kitchen. No longer just a barbeque counter or the lone charcoal grill, the outdoor kitchen is growing in size and functionality as it steals the spotlight and becomes a main focal point in the
