HOT WEATHER HEADER   Shrinkage is a volume or deformation to the concrete. The paste component of a concrete mix is often the target of shrinkage, rather than the aggregates. The paste is soft, porous, absorbent and it shrinks as much as 1% of its initial volume on its first day after casting.

There could be several factors contributing to why the cement paste will shrink. One is shrinkage caused by the loss of water, otherwise known as drying shrinkage. Drying shrinkage occurs when the rate of evaporation of the concrete exceeds the rate of bleeding. Typically, drying shrinkage is more of a problem during the warmer months. Cracks resulting from this are referred as "drying shrinkage cracks". The way to control drying shrinkage is to reduce the rate that the concrete is drying.

Unfortunately, even if the concrete is well hydrated and "drying shrinkage" is very minimal, shrinkage can still occur. This is due to an event called "chemical shrinkage". This type of shrinkage can lead to a volume reduction of the cement paste, and cause drying of the concrete from the inside.

Whichever reaction takes place, one thing we can be sure of is that concrete is going to shrink, however, there are measures that can be taken to help reduce the amount of shrinkage that occurs. One measure is to use a larger size of aggregate when possible. The smaller the aggregate, the greater the paste volume, and the paste is the high shrinkage component.

A second measure, to control shrinkage, is to control the rate of drying of the concrete. The use of wind breaks, sunshades and "Evaporative Reducers" followed by "Membrane Forming Curing Compounds" are all ways to control the rate of drying of the concrete mix.

HUB FILM - Evaporation Control
Mixing: For best results, mix thoroughly before each use. Do not over agitate or use high speed mixing equipment. HUB FILM concentrate can be mixed at a ratio of 10 parts water per 1 part
HUB FILM concentrate for normal conditions. And 5 parts water per 1 part HUB FILM concentrate for extreme conditions. Blend the concentrate separately, then agitate with clean, potable water.
(One gallon of HUB FILM, after dilution, should cover approximately 200 - 400 square feet)

Construction Spending Stumbles Again, but Stimulus is a Bright Spot

Construction spending shrank again in May, dropping 8% from a year earlier, although homebuilding and stimulus-funded public works increased from year-ago levels, according to an analysis of new Census Bureau data by the Associated General Contractors of America. "Stimulus has made a difference, but Congress needs to provide long-term funding for transportation and water projects to assure further economic growth," Ken Simonson, chief economist for the construction trade association, said.

Contractor Comedy

A lawyer, an economist, and a contractor were going to the bathroom. The lawyer gets done, washes his hands, and then proceeds to use almost the entire roll of paper towels to dry his hands. He says,
"I was taught to be thorough."

The economist gets done, washes his hands, but uses only one paper towel. He says,
"I was taught to be environmentally friendly."

The contractor gets done and leaves without washing his hands. He says,
"I was taught not to pee on my hands."
STRANGE FACTS
and Useless Information

If you yell for 8 years, 7 months
& 6 days, you will produce enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
(Although, there are some people with enough "Hot Air" to boil an entire pot of coffee in less than a minute!)

The ant always falls over on its right side when intoxicated.
(Kinda makes you wonder who has the time to get an ant drunk and why would they even think about wasting good beer!)

It's illegal to drink beer out of a bucket while you're sitting on a curb in St. Louis!
(But, it's O.K. to drink beer out of a bucket while you're "Staggering" down the street, if you can actually perform this feat!)
