Lent Violet White March 2011

Greetings!

Happy Birthday, United Methodist Women!

We are now 142 years old! On March 23rd, 1869, it was a stormy night when eight women met and began this movement. We've grown into a worldwide ministry of love and service to women, children and youth.

Read about mission updates in our area, opportunities to serve and advocate, resources for your own spiritual journey, and future events you and your friends will want to attend.

Social Action
We are asked to be His voice, His hands, His feet in this mixed-up hurting world!

Let us join together and work with our Lord to create a beloved community here on earth as it is in heaven. We have many opportunities to serve the Lord this year due to the state of our economy. The reward of being in partnership with God and watching His will be done is indescribable!

You may be thinking that Who am I? I don't have position, or power, or influence. But ladies, WE DO!! When we work to bring about God's Kingdom on earth, He promises ... read more

Acts of Faith by Eboo Patel

on UMW Reading Program list

Acts of Faith book
Eboo Patel redefines pluralism and creates a model of youth ministry which confirms that bringing youth together to engage in service from diverse religious traditions does not undermine their own religious identity, but will actually reinforce and deepen it.Serving together in this way promotes understanding and respect of different faith traditions by identifying what we all hold in common. Lasting relationships are developed and community is built.
If you are offended by the extremist rhetoric of today you will be absorbed in Patel's story, challenged by his message and given hope for our future.                            -- Lori Stafford

Weekend Mission Event  July 22-24 at Austin College, Sherman
Remember going to church camp? I went to a great camp in the Little Rock Conference called Camp Tanako. I remember that special feeling of God's call on my life and the leap of faith I felt when it seemed "all things were made new." We all wish those kinds of mountain top experiences could happen regularly. Well, United Methodists Women can get that experience and find renewed faith and blessings each year at our conference's School of Christian Missions.

A sister in Christ once told me I had to go to the School of Mission and so I went! SOCM has been such a blessing in my life! I worship, learn, grow in faith, enjoy fellowship and am moved to action. Make SOCM a priority and encourage your friends to attend. Many units sponsor several members' registration and those members share the experience with the rest of the group. Units reap rewards when their members go to SOCM and find renewed commitment and energy to further the work of Christ in their communities and churches.

I hope we see members from each and every unit in the North Texas Conference at this summer's School at the lovely new facilities of First Richardson UMC. Your Planning Team promises great study leaders, interesting studies and a wonderful opportunity to "Make All Things New!"                   -- Dana Harkey, 2011 SOCM Dean
