"Whereas, Raising Readers is celebrating its tenth year and has provided over 1.3 million books to Maine children, ages birth to
five, at birth and at well-child visits with their healthcare provider...therefore, I, Governor John Baldacci, do hereby
proclaim March 1 though 31st as Raising Readers Month."

Gov. John Baldacci named March Raising Readers Month in honor of the program's achievements over the last decade. The proclamation recognizes the contributions of the 1,400 healthcare providers and staff at 365 participating sites that give books to children across the state, noting that children who are read to are more likely to have the early literacy skills they will need to succeed when they go to school. Access to all these books seems to be making a difference, two-thirds of Maine parents report reading to their young children daily.
Prescription: A Trip to the Library
Looking for great books to share with children? Check out one of Maine's 350+ public libraries! Celebrate National Library Week April 11 - 17th with a trip to your local library. While you are there, check to see if the library has a story hour or other children's programming. Find your local library.

While you're at the library, lok for the anthologies ofBook cover: 5 Stories for Maine Children books by Maine authors and illustrators that have been published for Raising Readers. These special collections are given at the five year well child visit as kids "graduate" from the program. So far, we've published five collections and are working on a sixth. The books are available only through Raising Readers but they've been so popular that we've sent copies of each collection to all public libraries in Maine so everyone can enjoy them.

Choosing Just the Right Booksin  baby with basket of booksg
When parents, doctors, librarians, and early childhood experts get together to review children's books it is a blast. The Raising Readers book selection committee met this month to review and score books for possible use in the program.  Nearly 100 titles were pored over and discussed,  providing lots of great insight to help us choose just the right books. You can view all previously distributed books here.
