Hubbard For House Newsletter
Friends,
April has been an eventful month. We filed our 45 Day Report with
the Secretary of State's Office, which showed us with a significant
cash-on-hand advantage. Also, our race was recently rated a "Lean GOP"
seat by a prominent Alabama political website, downgraded from a "Likely
GOP" seat, which shows momentum on our side. Finally, APT is airing a
documentary on my great-grandfather and namesake, Sen. Lister Hill. His
legacy of bipartisan public service is still with us today in Alabama. This campaign is what some traditionally call a "grass-roots
campaign." It is built on my relationships with all of you. Every time
someone sees a sign in a yard, every time someone reads about us in the
paper or hears about us on the radio, every time someone shares a good
word about what we are doing with this campaign, we build momentum. The
success of this campaign depends on you. Please continue to be
involved, and thank you for your support.

Joe Leads District 73 Race in Fundraising
On April 19, 2010, all candidates with a
June primary filed their 45 Day Reports with the Secretary of State's
Office. Even though we have no primary opposition, we
joined the two Republicans in the race and filed our financial
disclosures. In our financial disclosures, we
reported raising more than $62,000 to date. We now have
over 190 individual donors, many of whom live in the district and have
known me all my life; that is the hallmark of this campaign. We can attribute this broad support
amongst individual donors in the district to our commitment to
transparency and accountability. The two candidates vying for the
Republican nomination in June each reported having just over $23,000 on
hand. Whoever prevails in the June Republican primary will
have to immediately begin raising money to be competitive in the
November election. Our success in this campaign has been
grounded in our broad base of financial support amongst individual
donors. I am humbled by the support I've received from the
people in this district, especially in these difficult economic times. They know my commitment to this community, and I will always
honor their trust.

Momentum is on Our Side in District 73 Race
As the Democratic nominee for
House District 73, we have started to pick up momentum. Our
broad base of financial support is one reason the odds have improved
for us to pick up this seat, according to the conventional wisdom in
Montgomery political circles. "Doc's Political Parlor" ( politicalparlor.net),
a website that covers Alabama politics, recently consulted with a small
group of Republican and Democratic "insiders" to rate the legislative
races in 2010. House District 73 was initially listed as a
"Likely GOP" seat. In 2006, Grimes handily won
re-election with no strong challenger in either the Republican Primary
or in the general election. In its most recent ratings of
legislative races, however, the Parlor downgraded House District 73 from
a "Likely GOP" to a "Lean GOP" seat. The people in this District know we can
do better. I've known these folks all my life, and I've worked hard to
earn their trust. That has put the wind at our backs. The race for District 73 is
fast becoming a battleground for control of the State Legislature. With redistricting on the horizon in 2011, both parties are
vying for a majority in the Statehouse. District 73 is one
of the few Republican seats where that a Democrat is competitive, and
that makes our momentum all the more important.

The Legacy of Lister Hill
My great-grandfather and namesake, Joseph Lister Hill, was an Alabama
Congressman and Senator for nearly half a century. Alabama Public
Television is airing a documentary on his service to Alabama and his
country in the coming weeks.
Please visit the APT website (http://www.aptv.org/schedule/showinfo.asp?ID=268189) for local listings, or view the video online (http://www.aptv.org/VideoRoom/viewprogram.asp?FileID=1313). Senator Hill's legacy of public service is still with us today in
Alabama. Every Alabamian who received an education through the GI Bill
has Lister Hill to thank; every Alabamian who has been employed with or
has received electricity from the TVA has Lister Hill to thank; every
Alabamian who has rural telephone service or rural housing assistance
has Lister Hill to thank; and, every Alabamian who has received
medical treatment in a county health clinic has Lister Hill to thank. My great-grandfather understood that public service is not about
political parties; it's about people, and good government is responsive
to the needs of all people of all parties. His bipartisan record
reflects his belief that public service is the highest of callings. I
am humbled to carry on his legacy, and I will work to bring to our
Statehouse that same spirit of cooperation and statesmanship that will
put our government to work for each and every one of us. |
