PREPARE FOR WEATHER EMERGENCY

What To Do Before a Storm to Protect Your Property

Ensure that your property is protected to the fullest extent possible:
Install storm shutters in wind-prone areas.
Secure or store outdoor furniture and loose items.
Trim tree branches that are close to the structure; remove dead trees and limbs.
Reinforce garage doors.
Inspect and replace caulking and weather stripping around doors and windows.
Be sure you have a copy of your insurance policy and an inventory of the property and contents in a safe place.

Protect Yourself and Your Family

Be sure you have these items on hand:
Battery-operated radio and flashlights with fresh batteries
Supply of bottled water and non-perishable food
Blankets and clothing
First aid kit and any necessary prescription medications
If you're in an area prone to power outages, consider purchasing an auxiliary generator.
Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes, and if asked to evacuate, do so
Be certain your car is in good working order and the tank is full.

What to Do After a Storm

Make sure all family members are safe.  Listen to the radio for public service. announcements.  If  evacuated, do not return to your home until authorized to do so.  If at home, wait for the "all clear" announcement before venturing outside.
Don't touch downed power lines; assume they are live no matter how long they have been down.
Check for gas leaks.  If you smell gas leave immediately and call the utility company from a neighbor's house.
Don't try to move large trees or branches that have fallen on your home. You could hurt yourself and possibly increase the damage to your home.
Cover broken windows or holes in walls or roofs to prevent further damage.

DEVELOP A DISASTER PLAN FOR YOUR BUSINESS

In light of the recent catastrophic Verizon outage, that affected thousands of businesses throughout the Merrimack Valley (including MTM), isn't it time to develop a solid DISASTER PLAN for your business?  In the past year alone, the area has suffered through power outages, storms, and now phone outages, that have severely affected thousands of businesses.  Many businesses have lost thousands of dollars in revenue, downtime and lost opportunities.

As risk managers, we at MTM, encourage and support our clients to adopt comprehensive emergency  tools, that would facilitate getting your business back up and running after a disaster.  The essentials of any DISASTER plan should include the following:

-Backup generators that will restore power to the business.

-Planned back up of telecommunications (phones, faxes, etc.) Use of cell phones, off site fax servers and computer networks will insure that your business is able to continue to operate efficiently.

-Pre-arranged agreements that will allow you to move operations to other sites, until the premises can be occupied again.

-A written plan outlining each employee's duties and obligations in the event of a disaster affecting your business.

At the end of the day, no company expects to be affected by emergencies that can shut down their business.  We buy insurance for the major risks, but we need to prepare to mitigate the losses that can affect us on a day to day basis as well.

For more information on how to develop your own DISASTER PLAN, contact us at MTM insurance.
