HIRING OF CONTRACTORS

At MTM Insurance, our goal is to provide not only the most cost effective and comprehensive coverage for our clients, but also continual advice on how to protect your business and your personal assets.
This month, we remind all our clients about guidelines to follow when hiring outside services/contractors to work at your business or your home. Before you agree on hiring that contractor to provide you needed repairs, installations, etc., please request the following:
A certificate of insurance from the company/person evidencing that they have COMMERCIAL GENERAL LIABILITY AND WORKERS COMPESNATION COVERAGE
This certificate of insurance will prove that the company/person you have hired, has proper insurance in place. The liability insurance should provide liability for any PROPERTY DAMAGE OR BODILY INJURY that may occur in the course of their work. The workers compensation will allow them and their employees/workers to collect benefits if injured while on the job at your workplace or home. The workers compensation certificate should specify that both the owner of the company and his employees are covered.
Without proper insurance in place, damages and injuries could become your liability. Why jeopardize your own businesses or homes? Always require that any company you hire provide you with proper evidence of insurance. As always, never hesitate to call us at MTM with any questions or concerns. We value your business and are here to assist you.

EPLI--ARE YOU COVERED? A waitress at a restaurant was dismissed for poor performance. Although her declining performance had been well documented by her employer, the waitress felt that her dismissal was a result of her recently announced pregnancy rather than her work. The waitress decided to sue her employer and the employer spent over $100,000 in defense costs alone to defend themselves from her allegations.
Do you have employees? If so, Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) is a key coverage. Protecting you from claims that may result from wrongful employment practices, such as discrimination, harassment, retaliation, termination, and failure to hire, this can be added to most Business Owners and Commercial Package Policies. With the economy the way it is, businesses have seen an increase in these types of claims. Dismissed employees, knowing they may have a difficult time finding another job, often try to get the most they can from their former employers. By adding this coverage to your policy, you can help prevent one of your employees from causing your business financial ruin.
Please give us a call to find out if we can add this coverage to your policy.

PROTECT YOUR "VALUABLES". . .
Due to the increase in the price of gold, silver, diamonds and precious stones, any appraisal over 2 years old is probably outdated and, if a loss occurs, the scheduled amount on your policy may not be enough to properly protect you. We recommend securing current appraisal for the jewelry items we have scheduled on your homeowner policy.

WINTER STORM WATER DAMAGE
Winter storms can wreak havoc on our homes. Many of our clients have sustained severe water damage due to the overflow from a sump pump or a back up of a sewer or drain. You can purchase special coverage to protect you from these types of losses. This coverage is important for everybody but critically important for anybody with a finished basement.

What's a limerick? It's a little rhymed verse. The first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other and have the same number of syllables (typically 8 or 9). The third and fourth lines rhyme with each other and have the same number of syllables (typically 5 or 6). Here is an example of limerick (by Edward Lear)
There was an Old Man of Kilkenny, Who never had more than a penny; He spent all that money, In onions and honey, That wayward Old Man of Kilkenny.
Good Luck!
