College Students

Your college student probably has a laptop and other valuable personal property with them if they are residing away at school.  In addition, they have a personal liability exposure that needs to be addressed.  Parents - please call us to discuss your options for protecting your students and their valuables.

Texting Law In Effect

If cited the cost of the fine is $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second offense and $500 for the third offense.  However, it will not be considered a moving violation, so there will be no surcharge on the auto policy.

Junior operators (under 18) cited for cellphone or texting violations will be fined $100 and have their licenses suspended for 60 days for the first offense. The second offense is subject to a $250 fine and a 180 day license suspension.  The third offense is subject to a $500 fine and a one year license suspension.

Fleet Safety Tips

MTM and our insurance company partners continue to strive to provide loss control tips to our clients. This month, we offer some risk management tools to our clients who have commercial auto exposures, and/or fleets of vehicles.

  • Require that all employees applying for positions where they will be driving company cars, submit a qualified driving record from the state registry. In addition, require that each driver continue to provide these records annually. Good driver selection and review will ensure that company vehicles are operated safely and most importantly, avoid costly accidents. Remember - less accidents and better claims experience will lead to reduced premiums in the future.
  • Be sure to have a standard vehicle maintenance program in effect, where company cars are checked regularly for engine issues, brake problems and other mechanical issues. A well maintained vehicle reduces the likelihood of accidents.
  • Take advantage of Safety Programs offered by many insurance companies. These professionally operated schools will teach and reinforce safe driving habits for your employees.
  • Be sure that your company has a strict cell phone and texting policy. In many states, the use of cells phones and texting are either limited or illegal while driving. Impress upon your employees to pull off the road safely, if they need to use the phone. Distracted drivers are the cause of many accidents each year.

Dog Bite Claims

Dog bite claims are on the rise.  They accounted for more than one third of all homeowner losses in 2009; amounting to $412 million dollars.  A single lawsuit, even if the dog owner wins, costs hundreds of thousand of dollars to defend.

MTM can offer solutions to help you protect your assets in the event of a dog bite claim.

Please call us to discuss your options further.
Workers Compensation Coverage for Domestic Employees
Massachusetts law requires that workers compensation coverage be provided for all domestic employees who work more than 16 hours per week.  You are subject to the
law regardless of whether the employee is a full-time, part-time, seasonal or temporary employee.  A domestic employee is somebody who works at an insured's home.  The most common employee of this type is a nanny or a babysitter.  We can provide inexpensive workers compensation policies to ensure that you comply with the law and most importantly, to ensure that you have the protection you need in the event of a claim.  Give us a call if you are interested in a quote.
