Board News -

 Board Meeting

Due to the Annual Meeting on December 1 and the Organizational meeting on December 6, there was no regular board meeting.

The Officers elected at the Organizational Meeting are: Ryna Rothberg, President; Marilyn Ruekberg, Vice President; Joyce Bender, Secretary; Erwin Levy, Treasurer; and Assistant Treasurer/Secretary. Inesa Nord-Leth.

After the election of officers, the Board began its work approving outside catering by Guckenheimer for lunches served outside of the Towers. This is done to provide revenue for Mutual Fifty and additional on site staff.

The next item the new Board discussed was a proposed new bus routing system that utilizes the Towers as a hub for the village bus route. If this routing system is approved by the Community, the advantage to Towers residents would be great. There would be buses leaving the Towers every thirty minutes for all destinations outside of the community. This would mean all medical stops, grocery stops, pharmacies, and beauty shops would be available every half hour without a transfer. Destinations within the community such as the clubhouses would require a transfer at Clubhouse I. This routing system will go to the Mobility and Vehicle committee next month and then would need to be approved by GRF before it goes into testing on weekends at the Towers. This is projected for March or April.

The Board then discussed Board of Director assignments to the GRF committees.

Shopping Carts: Mutual Fifty no longer maintains the grocery shopping carts. However, that does not mean that you can "borrow" one permanently. They are still very useful to residents and they should be returned to the tunnel as soon as you are finished using it. If you would like a cart for a longer period, you can purchase a wheeled cart at the Reception Desk. We regret the carts that are for sale are too large for use on the buses.

Dining Room Service: The dining room is open for service until 7:00 p.m. At that time, the Guckenheimer Staff will be taking down the soiled tables and resetting them for the next meal.

Who ever said it never rains in Southern California?

It's almost that time of year again when you need to get out your rain bootsRubber boots

and umbrellas.  But most importantly it's time to check the weep holes on your balcony.    Over the summer leaves from your plants can clog the weep holes and restrict or completely clog the weep holes.  This can cause water to back up into your unit!  To prevent this from happening ask your housekeeper to check the weep holes and make sure they are clear from any .  A little preventive maintenance can eliminate any potential disasters later.

Meet Your Neighbor

 Elly Wagner

Elly (and she will tell you that is Elly with a 'Y'), was born in New York City to Hungarian parents. Her father was a musician and played an instrument not often seen in the U.S., the beautiful four legged Cimbalom. When Elly was two the family, which included her parents and two brothers, moved to Atlantic City where Elly's dad led a small orchestra which performed in an elegant hotel.

Elly, the only girl, was the princess of the family. When she was four she was enrolled in the Dawson Dancing Dolls dance school in Atlantic City and about that time her father joined the well known band leader Paul Whiteman and he began traveling extensively.

At age fifteen Elly and the family moved to California. Her education continued there where she graduated from Hollywood High School, going on to receive her BA in Holistic Health Education from Antioch University in Los Angeles.

She married and had a son, Daniel. Her family has grown to include Daniel's wife Sherry, two wonderful grandchildren, Julian age 10 and Emma, age 4 who have lived in New Zealand for the last seven years.

Elly's background in dance opened doors for her dancing in the film industry. She was involved with Holistic Health Care at two community Colleges, Pierce College in Los Angeles and Cal Lutheran College in Ventura County. As an executive secretary for the California Legislative Conference she has worked with labor unions, women's groups, minority groups, small farm owners and the Railroad Brothers to mention a few. During legislative sessions she lived in Sacramento.

As a general partner in the Dyna Construction Company she participated in the building and selling of apartment complexes.

An avid volunteer, Elly was a nurse's aide during WWII and, eventually, the issue that became closest to her heart was universal health care. Very involved with campaigning for her cause she worked hard to help enact legislation which is now known as the 'single payer' healthcare program.

Elly held the post of President of People for a National Healthcare Program for eight years.

Her hobbies include reading and studying healthcare periodicals, lecturing, discussing politics and of course dancing as her health permits.

Her travels have led her all over the world. She has seen the Hawaiian Islands, England, Greece, France, Sweden, Israel, Spain, Mexico, Tahiti and of course New Zealand.

Elly says she is enjoying the luxury of "no deadlines". Her daily routine no longer includes schedules full of lectures, appointments or meetings.

She says she is "continually impressed" with the planning and providing of activities here at the Towers and the efficient manor in which the front desk and maintenance run.

Elly's greatest challenge comes from trying to gain an understanding of who she is and where her personality quirks come from. She has come a long way in acceptance of things she cannot change and has taken actions to make deliberate, positive changes in her life.

One wish? Funding for her worthy causes whether they be family and friends, the arts or medical research.

Happenings by Pam Peeler

Our own current event authority Charles Wilbourn will be leading an Emeritus class on Wednesdays beginning January 11th at 3:30pm. The class is titled 'Western Civilization Since 1648' but will include the contemporary events everyone enjoys as well. A flyer was sent out last week with information on enrolling in Emeritus classes.

We hope everyone saw Georgia Scott's television appearance as an audience member during a taping of Jeopardy on Friday December 16th. Alex Trebec pointed her out to millions of Jeopardy viewers and Georgia answered back with a wave and a smile!

One of my favorite activities is Monday night Bingo here at the Towers. As required by law the total yearly Bingo winnings are tallied in December and sent to City Hall. In 2011 we gave away a whopping $5905.00 in prize money. Our final jackpot of the evening has been averaging between $50 and $60 every week and that is in addition to the other eight games we play each night. I look forward to seeing you all at Bingo when it resumes on January 9th.

Jo Ann has lots of fun events planned for this year. Watch for our flyers and postings to keep abreast of your entertainment options!

A thank you note to the residents of the Towers at Laguna Woods Village:

Dear Residents,

No matter if you observe Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, set up a manger scene, display a menorah or celebrate the new harvest, the end of every year is special in some way to all of us. It is our chance to look back, remembering moments, good and bad, that have impacted our lives. Even more importantly though, is to look forward, ahead to the future, to the changes we can make.

The holidays bring different things to different people. The smell of an old favorite recipe, that one special gift which meant so much, family members faces lit up by beautiful colored lights and, of course, friends. Friends. That is what strikes me the most about the Towers, the friendships that develop between the residents, the PCM staff, the Guckenheimer Staff or any combination of the above. The sharing of stories, laughter and tears here cannot be fully appreciated by an outsider or onlooker. Neither can the amount of hard work that goes into the around the clock schedule set up to keep the Towers running smoothly.

Throughout the year approximately 70 staff members from the office, maintenance, housekeeping, the kitchen and dining rooms work to make the Towers the best it can be and we want to impress upon you, the Towers resident, how grateful we are, especially in these economic times, to receive your token of appreciation that is the holiday fund.

Your generosity not only touches the employees and staff members of the Towers but their families as well. We all want to say thank you and we wish all of you only the best in the upcoming year. We look forward to more friendship, fun and the opportunity to serve you in 2012.
