Board News -
On November 17 the Board held the last meeting with the current Board of Directors. The Annual Meeting will take place on December 1, in Lortscher Hall at 2:00 p.m. President Ryna Rothberg thanked Keith Wallace, Secretary and Herb Harris, Treasurer for their years of service to the Mutual, as their terms will expire at the Annual Meeting.
The Board accepted a Community Rain Plan. This Plan will be accepted by each Corporation and is Staff's Plan for responding to major rain events where flooding may be a result.
The Board passed a resolution approving Board Officers. The reason for approval of the resolution at this time was a change in the Assistant Treasurer from Janet Price to Betty Parker. Ms. Price has taken a position at the PCM Corporate office as Chief Financial Officer.
The consensus of the Board was to allow "Spark of Love" to collect new, unwrapped toys in the Mutual Fifty lobby. These toys will be collected by the Orange County Fire Authority for distribution to needy families at this holiday season. The next time you are at the market, consider picking up a toy for a family who may not have a happy holiday without a little assistance. Watch for the decorated toy box near the tree.
The Board discussed in depth a document signed by 64 residents that stated: "We the undersigned, ask that the glossy dark tiling on the main floor be replaced with a safer type of floor covering. The present composite tile is hazardous. Anyone who falls can be permanently damaged."
The floor tile throughout the Towers is part of the original installation and is 38 years old. The tile is cleaned with a special product that produces shine without making the flooring slippery. The assertion by the manufacturer is that the floor surface is more durable and less slippery with the product than without the product. The surface texture of the tile is also indicative of its non-slip quality. However, it is true that a fall on any indoor or outdoor walking surface could leave one injured regardless of the surface material.
Any assertion that the tile flooring is hazardous is not borne out. The product used on the tile meets the ASTM static coefficient of friction standard for slip resistance. If the tile were unsafe, health and safety codes would not allow it to be used and the Consumer Product Safety Commission would have taken action. It is not substantiated by the experience of Mutual Fifty that the tile is hazardous.
Changing the tile or installing carpet does not necessarily result in a reduction of the number of falls or a reduction of injury. In the Towers common areas all carpet is laid over concrete. A search of our records indicates that Security logged 26 falls at the Towers in the last 22 months. Of those 26 falls, only three were on tile flooring and two of those was the same person, who fell twice within 24 hours.
Assistance Alert: If you are a resident who has an alert system to call for help if you fall or are incapacitated in some way, please do not use the Reception Desk as the first responder. It may appear that Staff is there 24 hours a day, so it seems to indicate the Desk staff can be the first responder for your caller alert system. This is not the case. There are liability issues for Mutual Fifty. No individual resident is allowed to have the Reception Desk as the first call when your assistance alert goes off. If you have arranged for the first call to go to the Reception Desk, you must change your arrangements.
Shopping Carts: Mutual Fifty no longer maintains the grocery shopping carts. However, that does not mean that you can "borrow" one permanently. They are still very useful to residents and they should be returned to the tunnel as soon as you are finished using it. If you would like a cart for a longer period, you can purchase a wheeled cart at the Reception Desk. We regret the carts that are for sale are too large for use on the buses.
Dining Room Service: The dining room is open for service until 7:00 p.m. At that time, the Guckenheimer Staff will be taking down the soiled tables and resetting them for the next meal. |

Who ever said it never rains in Southern California?
It's almost that time of year again when you need to get out your rain boots
and umbrellas. But most importantly it's time to check the weep holes on your balcony. Over the summer leaves from your plants can clog the weep holes and restrict or completely clog the weep holes. This can cause water to back up into your unit! To prevent this from happening ask your housekeeper to check the weep holes and make sure they are clear from any . A little preventive maintenance can eliminate any potential disasters later.

'Smile-In' The Towers Troupers
The week of November 7th was hectic and fun filled here at the Towers. With a cast of approximately twenty five, the group of residents, led by Joyce Bender and Sally Levy, put on a variety show lasting about forty five minutes.
Setting the mood for both performances, Ruth Simons tickled the ivories while the audience members found a seat for the show. MC Ima Hoppin (better known as JoAnn Emmerich), dressed in her finest Red Hat Lady garb, started the show with a joke and kept us laughing in between acts. Ethel Neidoff's poetry gave us the low down on the upcoming soiree and, with the help of Marilyn Ruekberg, the Troupers dancing girls, which included Betty Bent, Fran Glasser, Jan Foster, Sonia Meyers, Dorothy Caldwell and Blanche Goldman strutted their stuff and flashed their smiley faces while the audience sang along to 'When You're Smiling'. Nurse Fran Dixon led Southern Belle Jan Foster to the Dr. played by Mort Bender. His diagnosis was swift...a Canarial Disease! Not to worry, it is easily treatable! Ethel Neidoff, Jackie Scheppers and Dorothy Caldwell touted the benefits of a little liquor and funny Fran Glasser, in her classic clown make up, made us laugh with her jokes before the Sap (Herb Harris) ran through the trees announcing the arrival of spring.
Saddling up and riding in on their stick ponies came Erwin Levy, Pat Casey and Sally Levy, telling tall tales of lost sheep and the consequences of them straying and sans sirens, Highway Patrolman Herb Harris pulled over the speeding Ruth Allen and Joe Evans (in the automobile created by the set design team) and was dismayed to read on her license that she was from Arkansas, where apparently, he was previously unlucky in love.
Fred Emmerich left everyone "howling" with laughter when he did his rendition of the pup needing a home while Betty Bent sang 'How much is that Doggie in the Window?' Betty also crooned the tune 'Paper Doll' while cast members danced with their sometimes well dressed and sometimes boney partners. Herb Harris and Fred Emmerich's skeletal dance mates lost enough weight while waltzing around that in the end they also lost their drawers!
In addition to Erma Savage reciting the advantages of a smiling face, she and Joe Evans entered the ring and hammered away with gloved fists at the problems of marriage until there was a TKO.
The only non-resident performers were a trio of balladeers from the kitchen staff, Lonnie, Ludi and Victor singing and dancing to the traditional Mexican tune 'Toro'. It was muy bonita and utterly magnifico!
The show culminated in the cast doing the Hokey Pokey before taking their final bows. It was a lot of work, but so much fun. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next! | |

Did you know?

Did you know, per Towers Chef Martine Covarruias:
- Towers residents prefer dark meat over white meat when eating turkey?
- Thanksgiving dinner started off with soup du jour of French Onion?
- Staff served up four turkey breasts, two whole turkeys and four additional turkey legs?
- In addition to the traditional turkey, residents could chose from three large hams or thirty-five pounds of Salmon?
- The kitchen cooked up thirty pounds of mashed potatoes and thirty pounds of stuffing?
- Complimentary dishes included butternut squash, green beans, carrots and no less than seven fancy salads?
- For dessert they dished up ten pumpkin pies, ten apple pies and seven pecan pies? That's two hundred and seventy slices of pie! Who doesn't like PIE???
- To wash it down there was two cases of quart bottles filled with apple cider?
- Two extra kitchen personnel were brought in to help?
- Chef Martine has been with the Towers five years and this is his fourth Thanksgiving here?
With about two hundred and eighty residents to feed here at the Towers, everyday is busy and Thanksgiving especially so. Much appreciation to the staff of Guckenheimer for a Thanksgiving feast to be thankful for!

The Towers Koi Pond
Recently the Koi pond at the Towers was temporary host to many displaced fish while their own home at Clubhouse One was being remodeled. If you had the opportunity to enjoy this potpourri of orange, black and white splashing about in the cool waters just across from our main entrance, then you know what a delight it was to have our visitors here.
After the renovation of their home was complete, they returned the favor while our pond was drained, cleaned, repaired and a new pump and filter installed. Our five friendly tenant fish were transported to Clubhouse One via fish limo and were treated to a good fish cleaning, fin and tail fluff and polish, and of course, gill enhancement procedures.
As their week of spa treatments came to an end, our coy Koi returned to their pond refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to enchant us all with their Halloween hues and flashy, fishy behavior.
In addition to the original school of fishes, we accepted the generous gift of a six new fish and welcomed them with open fins and a blast of bubbles to our little pond.
Now, that could be the end of our fantastic little fish tale, but it isn't. There is a mystery, a twist, yes it's true! There is something FISHY going on at the Towers Koi pond! Unbeknownst to us, someone has placed six intensely orange fish in our pond. They are smaller than our Koi, but very beautiful and healthy looking fish. Some are a solid color and some have flecks of white tipping their tails and they are all cute as they can be. Are they Koi? Are they over fed goldfish? Maybe they are Neptune's minions, sent to see if the Towers would be someplace he would enjoy living. I am sure they would report back favorably.
Whatever they are, time will tell us...unless you know.
