Meet Your Neighbor
Bobby Stein
Bobby's Mother immigrated to the U.S. in 1904 from Mozir, Minsk County (then) Lithuania. Close to the same time, Bobby's beloved Bubi (grandmother) was arranging for her family, including Bobby's dad (age 6 at the time), her own parents and at least 10 of her younger siblings to leave their village near Kiev, Ukraine for Chicago, Illinois where Bobby was born.
Bobby says he was "chosen" by his future wife because of his exuberance, so setting aside his bachelor ways, he embarked on the breadwinning path as a junior partner in the family business.
Bobby is close to all his children, two sons and a daughter, his eight grandchildren and now, a great grandchild that is "1st fiddle" to him! Last July he spent three weeks traveling with his son and grandson camping at several Oregon lakes on the way to visit his daughter and her family in Portland. On the return trip down the Oregon coast and through the Redwoods, some of Bobby's thoughts were directed at his next adventure...moving into the Towers of Laguna Woods!
Drafted in 1945, Bobby returned to the University of Illinois after being discharged. In addition to that military accomplishment he was also drafted as a member of the Israeli Army Reserves where he served one month a year until his release at the age of 56.
Sports minded and athletic, Bobby played football in high school as well as coaching it, but it was academics that Bobby found indispensable. Graduating from USC with a BS in business and a minor in American Colonial History, his entrepreneur spirit eventually led him to move his family to Jerusalem where he opened The American Hardware Store, a multi department, do it yourself establishment in the Ramat Eshkol Shopping Center. His brother remains there today, running the hardware store.
At the Towers, Bobby enjoys the social dinner hour and an evening walk around the lovely grounds.

Board News -
There was only one action item in Open Session at the Regular Board meeting on May 19 and one lien was approved. Under the President's comments, Ryna Rothberg thanked staff on behalf of the Board for the Reception Desk remodel. Ed Presley and Todd Vance designed the desk to accommodate the 20 new services that have evolved over the years at the Towers. The key priority was to create a larger work space for the Reception Desk Staff as the equipment needed for the additional services reduced the actual work space of Staff to approximately 12 inches by 14 inches, hardly enough room to write a work order. The electrical work, wood work, installation, refinishing of the cabinets, and painting was done by Maury Rios, Rudy Ayala, and Jamie Barajas.
President Rothberg felt it imperative to call the residents' attention to the fact that it is illegal to block fire exits and that the Mutual could be in jeopardy of sanction from the fire authority. The impact of any sanction would be felt by all residents. The Board requested the cooperation and understanding of all residents that walkers must be safely stored out of any traffic aisles, and fire exits must be kept clear at all times. Space is available in both dining rooms to park walkers during the meal.
The Board wishes to remind you that no food is to be removed from the dining room at any time. Please do not carry food from the dining room.
The Board also requests that there is one entrée per person per meal. The kitchen staff is reporting that as many as three entrées are being ordered per person. While Guckenheimer attempts to meet the needs of the diners and honor their requests, they cannot continue to serve multiple entrées per person.
Please check to see whether you have Mutual Fifty dishes in your unit. Often when Guckenheimer makes a room service delivery and the meal is not finished when pick-up occurs, dishes are inadvertently left in the unit. Staff has found as many as a grocery cart full of Mutual Fifty dishes in a unit. Staff has also found Mutual Fifty dishes for sale in estate sales! This is an added expense for everyone as replacement dishes impacts the budget. Return dishes to the kitchen or call Housekeeping to assist you with no questions asked.
Staff reported on an investigation suggested by the Marketing Committee to utilize radio advertising for communicating the value of the Towers' lifestyle. The Board did not authorize Staff to continue the investigation but rather to seek additional flyers for reaching a broader market.
The recent Open House included 60 guests. The Spring Fiesta was held in Lortscher Hall at the same time as the Open House. Docent tours were conducted of the common areas with food offered to the Open House guests in Lounge II. The Realtors reported many good leads.
The Brunch ticket price is $19 beginning in June. Children under 14 are still $8. |

Disaster Preparedness
BE CALM - BE ALERT - HAVE A PLAN
Four Tiers of Towers Disaster Response:
- Tier 1 - Staff Response to a Suicide or TV cameras on site.
- Tier 2 - Staff and Community Response to Flooding or Local Event.
- Tier 3 - Staff and Orange County Fire Authority Response to Towers Fire.
- Tier 4 - Resident Preparedness for a Major event in the City, County, and State.
In the event of a Fire: - If the fire is in the unit-
- Leave immediately-All Parties
- Shut the door
- Pull the Fire Alarm
- If the fire is on your floor-
- Pull the Fire Alarm
- Shut the door to the Unit
- Depending on the mobility of the resident:
- Either - Stay in the Unit until assistance arrives or MOVE to the far end of the hall away from the fire.
The Orange County Fire Authority has a Protocol to respond to fires at the Towers. The Protocol for the entire County was based on the Towers, as the Towers was one of the First high-rise residential facilities in the County. One Fire Response Team will take over the elevators and begin to evacuate people from the floor where the fire is located; then from the floor above; then the floor directly below the fire. The Second Team will fight the fire inside the building and from outside the building by means of the hook and ladder truck. (This truck is not used for evacuating people but rather to get closer to the fire from the outside.) In the event of a fire, if you feel that your person is in danger, you should evacuate all parties immediately. However, the Fire Authority will commandeer the elevators and escort residents closest to the fire from the building using the elevators as the disaster allows. Tier 4 In the event of an earthquake of such magnitude that the elevators are out of service, it may result in residents stranded for as much as three to five days until help arrives. The elevators must be repaired by a licensed conveyance operator and cannot be repaired by Towers Maintenance Technicians. In the event that you are stranded in the Towers, you should have a sealable bag with emergency provisions for yourself. Emergency Preparedness Supplies A sealable plastic bag containing: Gloves, matches, List of special needs, extra eye glasses, Metal mirror, food (cans of tuna, raisins, etc.), prescription medication, hat, batteries, battery operated radio, make-up, pet food, leash, pet carrier, first aid supplies, eye irrigation, dry socks, cash, important personal information, including: ID, insurance papers, phone number.
