CHAMBER CONNECTION: Week of January 16, 2012
Greetings from Pulaski County
Chamber of Commerce

Dear Member:

Welcome to another great week! There are so many exciting things going on with our members that it is hard to know where to begin!

Last week our Community Involvement Group met at MK's for an open discussion on other ways business could enhance the quality of life in our community! Look for more information and a suvey in weeks to come on that! We need your input! This week the Tourism committte will meet at Fatz on Wednesday, January 18, at 11:30! We need to keep the momentum going on tourism. Last year Bike VA had a major impact on the economy and local businesses by bringing in 2000 riders. This year we have the NRV Skyfest on September 7, 8, 9, and expect to have over 20,000 people! Talk about IMPACT! For information or details please feel free to call me at (540) 674-1991 or visit our website www.pulaskichamber.info or www.nrvairshow.com! Alright, let's get down to business! Have a great week!

"Is the Grass Really Always Greener?"

It saddens me that so many citizens of Pulaski County, young and old alike, seem to be lacking in pride in our community.

For many of the young people, this is a function of age. For decades, young people have always been anxious to graduate from high school so they can live somewhere different to get a job or go to college. Even before graduation, Pulaski County kids want to live in, say, Blacksburg; the mother of a Blacksburg student just this week assured me that the same principle applies to kids in Blacksburg: they want to be in Roanoke.

Thought of the Week

Everyone is Important

During Mark's first month of college, the professor gave his students a pop quiz. He was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until he reached the last one: "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. He had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would he know her name? He handed in his paper, leaving the last question blank.

Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward the quiz grade. "Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They each deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say 'hello.'" Mark never forgot that lesson. He also learned that her name was Dorothy.
