CHAMBER CONNECTION: Week of November 28, 2011
Greetings from Pulaski County
Chamber of Commerce

Dear Member:

Hoping everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Last week the Chamber traveled to far Southwest Virginia for the 2011 Southwest Virginia Legislative Breakfast & Forum. It was a great opportunity to meet and greet our Southwest Virginia legislators; Senator Phillip Puckett, Senator Roscoe Reynolds, Senator William Wampler, Delegate Bill Carrico, Delegate Anne Crockett-Stark, Delegate Joe Johnson, Delegate Terry Kilgore, Delegate Will Morefield, Delegate Clarence Phillips. We are already making plans for our annual Richmond trip in January, so if any businesses have issues or concerns that they would like us to carry to Richmond please let us know.

There are lots of holiday activities this week so be sure to check the communitity updates. The Chamber's "Fairlawn Holly Trolley Christmas" is Friday night and that event is always fun for the children. Bring them out to Santa's Woodworking Workshop or over to SunTrust to tell Santa what they want for Christmas. Ride the Ole Trolley Polor Express to the live Nativity Scene at the Presbyterian Church. Come on out for a singing good time!

Warm Regards,

Peggy White

Chamber Spotlight by Sheila D. Nelson

At a recent Reality Day, the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia Tech Extension Service attempted to teach the 8th graders in Pulaski County the financial realities of life. New River Community College's Edwards Hall was abuzz throughout the day with nearly four hundred young people learning to make financial decisions utilizing limited resources.

Each one was randomly handed a sheet of paper with his/her occupation, income, marital status, and number of children on it. The sheet had lines to deduct for taxes, savings, housing, food, utilities, transportation, etc. - all normal expenses a household incurs. For the next few hours, the students were told to pretend that they were twenty-six years old.

"A Lesson From a Mad Hatter"

One of the first things to accomplishing great things in your life is to cease dwelling on teh negative things in your past. carefully assess your present strengths, successes, and achievements. Dwell on those positive events in your life, and quit limiting yoru potential by constantly thinking about what you have done poorly.
