 BUSINESS TIDBITS
Completing our discussion of the past few weeks, this week we begin by looking at the fourth status realm in consumer societies.  Growing pockets of consumers find pleasure and status stories in mastering skills and acquiring knowledge.  They attain status from finding an appreciative audience that's impressed with what they know, and can create, instead of what they consume.
To be on the inside/in the know, to have access, to be knowledgeable but also to be able to lead the way to the unique, the latest, the cutting--edge...this is now an established source of status, from consumers-turned-experts, to younger audiences obsessed with the newest things.  Anything you as a brand can do to assist the pursuit of deep or trivial knowledge will be appreciated, as long, of course, as the content is of superior quality.
The fifth and final stage in consumer societies to be discussed, is, of course related to the fact that one's status updates are one's status fix.  The online world is now truly an endless source of new status fixes.
First and foremost, when it comes to online status, it's all about who you connect to, and who connects to you, tribal style.  It still is about being unique, but it's about belonging, too; belonging to tribes whose membership renders status to its members.  Unlike in the 'offline world,' these connections (in numbers and in profiles) are visible:  friends and acquaintances are no longer the subject of awkward namedropping, but are visible to all.
We are talking friends on Facebook, Twitter followers and Retweets, the number of views for a photo on Flickr or a video on YouTube.  These are all symbols and numbers that are associated with one's social status and that can be shared instantly and on a potentially large scale in the connectivity realm.  This will then lead to an even bigger need for consumers to 'feed,' maintain, and improve their online presence with a steady stream of content:  thoughts, photos, videos, songs, opinions, stories and so on.  And then we haven't even addressed virtual possessions (Farmville, anyone?) or gaming skills, all begging to be showcased and communicated.  Make sure you help your customers collect, communicate and display online badges of honor in every way  possible.  One's online status updates are an integral part of one's overall social status.
All of the realms discussed during the past few weeks still do not cover the entire subject of Statusphere.
Because a person's vanity, ego, yearning to be recognized, seen, admired, and envied know no boundaries, there will always be new ways to help each of your customers stand out from the herd, as long as you keep a close eye on societal changes that lead to shifts in what constitutes status.
Develop a better understanding of who (and how) your customers are trying to impress.  If your brand is still mainly focusing on bigger, better, harder, but your customers aren't, then you obviously and urgently need to start exploring the rest of the Statusphere.
If you already actively serve a diverse crowd of status seekers, figure out how you can help them to better show off their new status symbols or better tell their status stories.  While they're used extensively in the bigger, better, harder realm, elements like showcasing, visibility, and story ingredients are still often overlooked in the generosity, green, in the know & skills, and connectivity realms.

"GOING GREEN" TIDBITS
 GO GREEN FACTS -- GENERAL
*The average American will throw 600 times their weight (90,000 lbs. or 47.5 tons) in the garbage
over their lifetime!  Go green, the majority of that trash is recyclable.
*Compact Flourescent (CF) bulbs use about 1/4 the energy to produce the same amount of light as
   traditional incandescent bulb.
*ENERGY STAR equipment uses an average 65% less electricity
  than standard models.
*Printer cartridges take about 450 years to decompose, so GO Green and recycle.
*The 1st recycling program was introduced in NYC in the 1890s.
*1/3 of an average landfill is made up of packaging material.
HEALTH HINTS
EXTREME HOT WEATHER:  PETS AND HEAT

Any animal can suffer from the heat, particularly very young or very old animals, short nosed breeds of dogs (e.g. pugs, bulldogs), heavy coated cats and dogs, and pets who are overweight or have a medical condition.

Safety Tips For Pets:

1.  Provide plenty of water and shade for your pet, especially while outdoors.
2.  Take extra precautions when exercising your pet outdoors.  Pets need exercise even when it is hot.  Exercise pets during the cooler part of the day and make time for rest along the way.  Also bring water for your pet or identify stops where water is available.
3.  Pets get sunburned, too.  Some animals are susceptible to sunburn.  Your pet may require sunscreen on his or her nose and ear tips.  Pets with light-colored noses or light-colored fur on their ears are particularly vulneraable to sunburn.
4.  Do not leave an animal in the car in extreme weather.  Cars can heat up to dangerouos temperatures very quickly.  Even with cool weather and the windows cracked open, temperatures inside the car can become extremely hot within a few minutes.  Leaving a pet in a car on a sunny day can lead to serious injury and death.

Heat Exhaustion And Heat Stroke In Pets

In summer heat, your pet can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  These conditions are  very serious.
You should be aware of the signs of heat stress, which could include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadinesss, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue.

If the animal shows symptoms of heatstroke, take steps to gradually lower the body temperature immediately.  Following these tips could save a life:
*Move the animal into the shade or an air-conditioned area.
*Apply ice packs or cold towels to the nead, neck, and chest or immerse the pet in cool (not cold) water.
*Let the pet drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes.
*Take the animal directly to a veterinarian.

 RECOGNITION

Patrick has been employed with the Pulaski County Public Service Authority for nine years.  He has been a dedicated and hard-working employee.  Patrick operates many different types of equipment owned by the PSA.  On many occasions he will complete one task and ask how he can help by doing some different job.
He lives in Draper and is married with a son.  He is an active member of the Draper Fire Department.  He is a positive role model through his hard work and dedication.
Cornelius Worrell has been employed by the Pulaski County Public Service Authority for four years.  Cornelius displays a quiet confidence that lets him excel in his daily responsibilities as an employee of the Pulaski Service Authority.  He is a loyal employee dedicated to providing a strong work ethic that is necessary in carrying out the daily tasks at the Public Service Authority.  His hobbies include collecting NASCAR items.  Cornelius is also an avid John Wayne fan.

TOWN OF PULASKI

The Employee of the Month for July 2010 is Sergeant Brandon Hamblin of the Fire Department.  Sergeant Hamblin has been employed by the Town of Pulaski for five years and a member of the Fire Department for eight years.
Sergeant Hamblin is also a certified Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I and Rope Rescue Operations Phase II
through the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, where he is also certified to teach Firefighter I and II classes.  Sergeant Hamblin is a member of the Pulaski Fire Department Rope Rescue Team, a Volunteer with the Newbern Fire Department with the rank of Captain and a member of the Pulaski County Wildland Fire Crew.
Recently there was a dairy fire in Newbern.  Pulaski responded with mutual aid, as did 9 other departments.  Sergeant Hamblin worked the fire.  The structure was owned by his family and Brandon did not allow personal feelings to interfere with his judgment.  He made precise, sound decisions and safety was his top concern.
Sergeant Hamblin was nominated because his dedication to life safety and the well being of the citizens of both the Town and County is unsurpassed and something of which we can all be proud.  He has a can do attitude, makes well thought out, calm decisions and always has a genuine concern for the citizens he protects, and his counterparts,  team members and subordinates.
In addition to the honor of receiving the Employee of the Month Award, Sergeant Hamblin will receive an additional paid day off from the Town and be eligible for the Employee of the Year Award at the end of the year.
