 BUSINESS TIDBITS
Continuing our discussion about types of consumer status fixes, this week we move to a totally different type of status realm.  Owning is no longer the only way for consumers to get their status fix:  the act of giving reflects well (if not better) in individuals, too.

Some members of society are now capturing the growing importance of "generosity" as a leading societal and business mindset. As consumers are disgusted with greed and its current dire consequences for the economy -- and while that same upheaval has them longing more than ever for institutions that care- -- the need for more generosity beautifully conincides with the ongoing and pre-recession emergence of an online-fuelled culture of individuals who share, give, engage, create and collaborate in large numbers.

Now, one of the most important drivers behind GENEROSITY is the collaborative/free/creation/crowdsourced/gift/sharing movement that --- especially online --- has unlocked in entirely new ways the perennial need of individuals to feel part of the greater good, to contribute, to help.  But the online world of course also makes it easy to showcase and share one's acts of altruism.

The status-implications for non-profit organizations, and B2C brands big on giving initiatives?  Work harder on helping your consumer-donors show and tell others about their donations and contributions!
"GOING GREEN" TIDBITS
WATER
*5 Billion Gallons -- amount of water used to flush toilets each DAY!
*Americans use an average of 100 gallons of water each day!
*Surveys show 36 states anticipate water shortages by 2013!
*If all US residential homes installed water-efficient appliances, the country would save more than 3       Trillion Gallons of water and more than $18 billion dollars per year!
*If 1 out of every 100 residential homes converted to water-efficient fixtures, we would roughly save 100 Million kWh of electricity per year and 80,000 Tons of GHG (GreenHouse Gas Emissions).  That's roughly taking 15,000 vehicles from the road for 1 year!
*Between 1950 and 2000, the US population nearly doubled.  However, in that same period, public demand for water more than tripled!  Go Green, save water.
*If your toilet is from 1992 or earlier, you probably have an inefficient model using at least 3.5 up to 6 Gallons per flush!  Now you can install 1.3 Gallons per flush or Zero-Gallons per flush!
*Faucets generallly flow 2 Gallons per minute.  Save 8 gallons every time you brush your teeth by turning the faucet off.
*Today's faucets run as low as 0.5 gallons per minute!
*Today's showerheads run as low as 1.0 gallons per minute!
*56 billion kWh per year -- the amount of electricity consumed by public water supplying and treating facilities!
*5 minutes of a running faucet equals roughly a 14 hour run time of a 60-watt light bulb.
*Bath = 70 gallons of water
*Shower = 30 gallons of water (change your showerhead to a low-flow head -- a gallon/minute)
*Outdated washing machines use about 40 gallons per load
*Newer, efficient washing machines use less than 28 gallons per load

*Using too much water also significantly contributes to "nonpoint source pollution."  This is when water moves across the ground, collecting pollutants from various sources, and eventually depositing them into our drinking water. Failing to use water efficiently can hurt our water supply by:
*Altering stream flows due to excessive withdrawals increasing the amount of dirty runoff water that flows into natural water supplies.  This runoff water carries sediments, nutrients, salts, and  other pollutants and can be caused, among other things, by over-irrigating urban landscapes or farm fields.
Nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are naturally occurring, but habitats can be destroyed when excess amounts of any one nutrient, especially phosphorus, are concentrated in the soil or water.
*Creating the need to build additional dams.  Dams generate nonpoint source pollution by trapping sediment and other pollutants, affecting water quality both upstream and downstream.  This concentrates pollutants, causes sediment in the river to pile up, decreases dissolved oxyen and alters water temperatures.

HEALTH HINTS

JUNE IS NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH
Each June, the National Safety Council encourages businesses to get involved and participate in National Safety Month.  Each week carries a theme that brings attention to critical safety issues.
     Week 5     June 28 - 30     Summer Safety
Summer is a great time to be outdoors; however, being exposed to hot weather for too long can result in serious health problems.  In 2006, between the months of May to August, 611 unintentional-injury deaths occurred due to heat exposure.  Take precautions to prevent heat related illnesses and monitor children and the elderly during heat waves.
Summer is also a time of increased travel on our nation's roads.  Fatalities between motorists and motorcycle riders have increased 131 percent between 1998 and 200-8.  Remember to watch for motorcyclists this summer when navigating the roadways.

JULY IS NATIONAL UV SAFETY MONTH

1.      During July UV Safety Month, the American Academy of Opthtalmology and Eye M.D.s around the country encourage everyone to protect their eyes from UV-related damage.
*Thesame UV-A and UV-B rays that can damage your skin can harm your eyes as well.  When you protect yourself from the sun, don't just think sunscreen -- think sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat.
*Excessive, prolonged UV exposure may be linked to the development of eye conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
*Extensive or intense exposure to UV rays can cause "sunburn" on the surface of your eye.  Similar to a skin sunburn, eye surface burns usually disappear within a coulple of days, but may lead to further complications later in life so protect your eyes.

2.     To protect your eyes, wear a brimmed hat and the right kind of sunglasses when you are going to be exposed to UV light.
*Wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays.
*If you spend time on the water or in the snow, consider purchasing goggles or sunglasses that wrap around your temples because they block the sun's rays from entering on the sides, offering better protection.
*Remember sunglasses don't have to be expensive to offer the right kind of UV protection.  Even inexpensive glasses can protect your eyes if they offer 99 to 100 percent UV-A and UV-B protection.
*Don't forget the kids.  Protect their eyes with hats and sunglasses.  In addition, try to keep children out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun's ultraviolet rays are the strongest.

 3.     It's important to protect your eyes when UV light is most intense.
*Generally, UV light is at the greatest level at midday (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), but you need to protect your eyes whenever you're oputside for a prolonged period, even when it's gray and overcast.
*Reflected sunlight off water, snow and pavement can be the most dangerous type of UV light because it is intensified.
*Your eyes can be harmed by UV light sources other than the sun, such as welding lamps or tanning lights.  So remember to wear eye protection when using these sources of invisible, high energy UV rays.

Eye health care is provided by the three "O's" - opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists.  It is the ophthalmologist, or Eye M.D., who can treat it all -- eye diseases and injuries, and perform eye surgery
