The Scoop from Brad and Lissa

ThanksgivingA Note of Thanks

On this Thanksgiving holiday we’d like to express our appreciation to the many people in our community who support Politics & Prose. These are challenging times for the bookselling industry generally, but as a result of your sustained patronage, P&P has remained strong and continues to thrive today.

In the five months since we assumed ownership, we’ve been especially heartened by the many words of encouragement from customers and by the enthusiasm many have shown for sustaining P&P. This community is so fortunate to have such large numbers of people who understand the importance of buying local, who see special value in maintaining a neighborhood, independent bookstore and who believe in P&P’s larger mission of promoting public debate and civic dialogue. Such loyal and enthusiastic backing means that the store can continue to provide expert bookselling and nearly 500 free author events a year, as well as special classes, programs and book groups.

At the same time, we don’t take our ongoing success for granted. We know we can always do better. And we trust that our customers won’t be shy about letting us know how we can improve.

Many thanks to one and all. And Happy Thanksgiving!

Cards

Holiday Cards are Here!

We have our usual fantastic assortment of holiday cards. Come in and browse. Here is just a sample!

Sassy and specialized, these “12 Days of Christmas” Boxed Greeting Cards (Allport, $14.95 each) allow your field of interest to take center stage in the Christmas carol.  Why settle for the predictable partridge in a pear tree? How about a blind bard in an olive tree for the literary set?  Or maybe a partridge in a pear sauce for the festive foodie?   Featuring the wit and whimsy of artist David Price, this clever card set is the antidote to ho-hum holiday cards. A modern art lover doesn’t want eleven pipers piping; but they’d love eleven Pollocks dripping.

So it Goes

Charles J. Shields
And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut, A Life
(Henry Holt, $30)
As the first authorized biographer of the inimitable Kurt Vonnegut, Shields, author of Mockingbird - an acclaimed life of Harper Lee, had the full cooperation of his subject and spent many hours with him in the year before Vonnegut’s death. Drawing on these interviews as well as on conversations with Vonnegut’s family and friends, Shields has constructed both a vivid narrative of Vonnegut’s experiences and an illuminating analysis of his fiction.

Events

Monday, November, 28, 10:30 a.m.

Marie Rutkoski
The Jewel of the Kalderash: The Kronos Chronicles: Book III
(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $16.99)
In the concluding volume of the Kronos Trilogy, Petra Kronos, Tomik, and Neel go to Romany, ready to deliver the Terrestrial and Celestial Globes and save Petra's father. But there’s a secret they hadn’t planned on, and it unleashes an epic power struggle. Ages 12-14.

Monday, November 28, 7 p.m.

Robert K. Massie
Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman
(Random House, $35)
With award-winning biographies of Peter the Great, Nicholas and Alexandra, and The Romanovs already under his belt, Massie is a natural to tell the story of Catherine (1729-1796). And it’s a remarkable story: born to a minor noble family in Germany, she was only fourteen when she came to Russia, but she quickly put into practice what she learned from her wide reading and correspondence with leading European thinkers, ruling firmly and gloriously for 34 years.

Tuesday, November 29, 7 p.m.

Chris Matthews
Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero
(Simon & Schuster, $27.50)
The highlights of JFK’s life are well known. In his recounting of Kennedy’s family life, his PT boat rescue, his stellar rise in politics, Matthews draws on interviews with Kennedy’s associates, oral histories, and a range of other documents to show how Kennedy really felt about the issues and events of his day, from the Peace Corps to civil rights to the race to put a man on the moon.

Wednesday, November 30, 10:30 a.m.

William Joyce
The Man in the Moon
(Atheneum, $17.99)
Before becoming The Man in the Moon, MiM was a baby with two loving parents and a loyal friend called Nightlight. Dark days soon arrived and MiM’s life was changed forever. Taking refuge on the moon itself, young MiM grew up to become a faraway friend to all children on earth, brightening the surface of the moon and inspiring other guardians of childhood, including a toymaker, a rabbit and a fairy. Twenty years in the making, this first book in William Joyce’s Guardians of Childhood series is stunningly illustrated and instantly captures the reader’s imagination.

Events

Wednesday, November 30, 4:30 p.m.

Jack Bishop
The Cook's Illustrated Cookbook: 2000 Recipes from 20 Years of America's Most Trusted Food Magazine
(Cook's Illustrated, $40)

Wednesday, November 30, 7 p.m.

Ann Beattie
Mrs. Nixon: A Novelist Imagines A Life
(Scribner, $26)
Unlike many recent first ladies, Pat Nixon did not write a memoir. Now Beattie, the accomplished novelist and short-story master, has come up with one for her. In this genre-stretching narrative, Beattie combines the public record of the woman in the respectable Republican cloth coat with reminiscences by those who knew her and adds a dash of imagination, capturing the elusive Mrs. Nixon and her thoughts about Dick, Henry, and Chairman Mao.

Thursday, December 1, 7 p.m.

Walter Isaacson
Steve Jobs
(Simon & Schuster, $35)
To his string of bestselling biographies of Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Kissinger, and others, Isaacson now adds the life story of Steve Jobs. Written with the cooperation of its subject, this profile of the inventor, entrepreneur, leader, and visionary, offers a detailed profile of a man as imaginative as he was fiercely perfectionist.

Meryle Secrest
Modigliani:  A Life (Knopf, $35)

The private life of the Italian artist and sculptor, Amedeo Modigliani, has always been painted in lurid colors. The first biographies of his short life - he died in 1920 at age 35, portrayed him with a black reputation, as an artist of rigor and originality, but a hopeless alcoholic, drug addict and womanizer. Meryle Secrest's new book seeks to peel back rumor and fiction to expose a much more complex and sympathetic figure.  Meryle Secrest is a Washington author, former feature writer for the Washington Post, and biographer with numerous studies in art, architecture and music. She has won many prizes and received the National Humanities Medal at the White House in 2006.

Free and open to the public.  Click here for more information or call 202-331-7282.

Music50 WORDS FOR SNOW

Kate Bush’s new CD, 50 Words for Snow (Anti-, $17.98) is like an enchanting book of seven wintry tales (it’s even packaged in a thin, hardback). Thematically and sonically related (with spare pianos, keyboards, and subtle drumming), each of Ms Bush’s spacious songs of longing set a mood and envelope the listener. Perfectly cast guest stars appear on two selections: Elton John on a duet of lovers across the ages, and Stephen Fry as a professor reciting those fifty words for snow, under an infectious soft samba beat. Lose yourself in the sounds of these lovely snowdrifts.
