POLITICS & PROSE SELECTS NEW OWNERS

The owners of the Politics & Prose Bookstore, Barbara Meade and David Cohen, have announced plans to sell the company to two Washington journalism and public policy veterans, Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine, who will become the store’s new owners later on this spring.

“Graham and Muscatine have the passion and wisdom to further strengthen Politics & Prose as a community institution that disseminates ideas and stands as a respected and revered public space," Meade and Cohen said in a statement. “We are confident that they have the wherewithal and vision to sustain Politics & Prose for many years.”

Meade and Cohen spent nearly nine months interviewing prospective owners. Graham and Muscatine’s commitment to serve full-time as hands-on booksellers was a key factor in their selection.

“We’re very grateful for this opportunity, which we consider both a privilege and a responsibility,” Graham and Muscatine said. “We will do everything we can to preserve P&P’s special culture and traditions, while also looking for new ways to ensure that this great store remains relevant, influential, and technologically up-to-date.”

Politics & Prose, a national leader in the bookselling business, was founded 27 years ago by Barbara Meade and Carla Cohen. The two women announced their decision to retire last June, four months before Cohen’s death in October. Despite wide-ranging changes in the book industry, the store has continued to enjoy rising revenues, thanks to flourishing author events, and a growing number of community partnerships.

Graham and Muscatine met at the Washington Post and, during their years as journalists, held a variety of reporting and editing assignments, with Muscatine focused on local politics and sports, and Graham on foreign and national security affairs. They are married and have three children.

After leaving the Post in the early 1990s, Muscatine worked as a White House speechwriter for President Bill Clinton and then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. She later collaborated on Hillary Clinton’s White House memoir, Living History, and most recently served as a Senior Advisor and Director of Speechwriting in the Office of Policy Planning at the U.S. Department of State. Graham is the author of two books: By His Own Rules: The Ambitions, Successes, and Ultimate Failures of Donald Rumsfeld, and Hit to Kill: The New Battle Over Shielding America from Missile Attack.

Muscatine, who was profiled in Tom Brokaw’s book about the 1960s, Boom!:Talking About the Sixties, was raised in Berkeley, California. She graduated from Harvard and was in the first class of women to be awarded Rhodes Scholarships for study at Oxford. Graham grew up in Chicago and Pittsburgh and received a bachelor’s degree from Yale and an MBA from Stanford.
