Sunday, November 21, 1 p.m. Carla Cohen Memorial Tribute For 26 years, Carla Cohen, our founder, and co-owner of Politics and Prose, brought her energy and intellect to building and maintaining one of the nation’s great bookstores. Please join us as we pay tribute to her incredible legacy in a memorial reception to which customers, colleagues, family and friends are invited. As the event approaches, we will continue to post more details on the online calendar event's page. The Washington Literacy Council has received many donations in her name, a number of them made anonymously. They are not able to privately thank some of these donors, so they wish to pass this message along to you in order to express their appreciation publicly.

LIVE TELECAST OF CORNEL WEST’S INTERVIEW WITH JAY-Z FROM THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY DECODED (Spiegel & Grau, $35) "When I first started working on this book, I told my editor that I wanted it to do three important things. The first was to make the case that hip hop lyrics - not just my lyrics, but those of every great MC are poetry if you look at them closely enough. The second was I wanted the book to tell a little bit of the story of my generation, to show the context for the choices we made at a violent and chaotic crossroads in recent history. And the third piece was that I wanted the book to show how hip-hop created a way to take a very specific and powerful experience and turn it into a story that everyone in the world could feel and relate to."- Jay-Z This is a free event and seating is general admission. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Decoded will be available for purchase at the event and a limited number will be pre-signed. For more information, visit hooksbookevents.com. Thursday, November 18, 7:30 p.m.

MARKDOWN BOOKS | |||||||
The novels of the amazing Portuguese Nobel laureate, José Saramago, are a deft mix of the fantastic and the mundane, and are as full of joy and whimsy as they are of wisdom. In one of his later works, DEATH WITH INTERRUPTIONS, he began from the premise that people in a certain town stop dying. Though that may sound like a stroke of luck, in fact it presents a host of practical problems. People still get sick. They age. Hospitals stay full. Priests can’t expound on eternal life, because it seems to have come to earth. And what about life insurance policies? At the same time, Saramago humanizes Death, making her a lonely, tender-hearted being. Available in paperback, $4.98. To describe Valerie Martin’s fiction by its subjects only touches the surface of her rich, thought-provoking craft. History, culture, psychology, ethics—these are just a few of the themes played out in her work. TRESPASS starts as a family story: Chloe is illustrating Wuthering Heights. Her professor husband is on sabbatical to write a book on the Crusades. Their son is turning 21 and leading his own life. Then the wider world interferes. The son becomes involved with a Croatian woman whom Chloe distrusts; he leaves college for Europe. As repressed events from the 1990s Balkans war begin to surface in his new wife’s family, the consequences of 9/11 come into play for Chloe and her husband. Martin’s novel keeps widening its scope, yet never loses sight of its individual characters. Available in hardcover, $5.98. Paul Theroux has been a novelist and noted travel writer for decades now. He’s seen the world, and in GHOST TRAIN TO THE EASTERN STAR: On the Tracks of the Great Railway Bazaar, he sees it again. Deciding to revisit the sites he first journeyed to thirty years before, he hops a train through Asia to see how post-Soviet Russia compares to the USSR, how boomtime China is like and unlike its pre-developed incarnation, and how Vietnam has established an identity separate from that of a war zone. What he finds is always fascinating and vividly evoked. Available in paperback, $4.98. Click here to buy these and other recently acquired remaindered books. - Laurie Greer

Music News |

NEW AFROCUBISM (Nonesuch, $17.98) – Fourteen years after Buena Vista Social Club, the original idea for that album – a Mali-Cuba collaboration – has finally come to pass. When their visas were delayed in 1996, Malian musicians couldn’t make the Havana sessions that producers Nick Gold and Ry Cooder had set up, and the result was an all-Cuban CD that was a world-wide phenomenon. But now, Nick Gold has assembled an all-star group of musicians to finally realize his project: guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa and Quarteto Patria lead the Cuban contingent, with kora player Toumani Diabaté, ngoni player Bassekou Kouyaté, guitarist Djelimady Tounkara, and balafon player Lassana Diabaté. Patricia Kopatchinskaja, RAPSODIA (Naïve, $16.99) – Classical violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja was born in Moldova to musical parents, and now collaborates with them to explore traditional Moldovan and Romanian tunes, as well as classical pieces influenced by folk music. She plays Enescu and Ligeti with pianist Mihaela Ursuleasa. Her father, Viktor, is a virtuoso on the cimbalom (large hammered dulcimer), and hey play pieces of Kurtág and a version of Ravel’s Tzigane.
GRAMOPHONE BEST OF 2010 Every year, Gramophone, the great English classical music magazine, selects its favorite recordings of the year. These are the most prestigious awards in the business. Click here for some highlights and more music news. - Andras Goldinger
