Happy Memorial Day! This weekend we are only hosting one event, which is for middle-grade readers. But next weekend, June 4-6, will be busy indeed as we invite you all to spend some time with us during our Summer Storewide Member Sale! If you can't fit us into your schedule, you can still get the benefits by shopping online over the weekend or by coming by the store before the sale and dropping off your shopping list. We'll complete the purchases for you during the sale, and you can pick the books up later!

We also invite you to pick up a copy of our 2010 Summer Favorites, in which our booksellers tell you about many of their recommendations for summer reading. All of these titles will be discounted to members all summer long.  Moreover, audiobooks will be discounted throughout the month of June to give you the opportunity to listen to books on CD during family car trips or leisurely days while on vacation.

Terence Samuel - The Upper House
7 p.m. Former chief congressional correspondent for U.S. News & World Report and currently director of communications at Green For All, Samuel has written an incisive portrait of the Senate. Considering the institution's history and rituals, he describes what it means to be a Senator today, giving particular attention to the experience of freshmen and the surprises in store for them.

Charlie Higson - The Young Bond Series Book 5: By Royal Command
10 a.m. Only James knows that an evil plot is afoot to destroy England. He flees Eton and goes to Austria, where he re-encounters an old enemy he will have to battle once again to get at the truth behind the evil plot. (Ages 10-14)

Tuesday June 1

Mark Edmundson - The Wisdom and Perfect Teachings of the Kings of Rock and Roll
7 p.m. A professor of English at the University of Virginia and author of Why Read?, Edmundson continues the coming-of-age story he began in Teacher. His new memoir opens after his college graduation. With no definite goal in mind, he tried cab-driving and backstage concert work in New York, briefly reconnected with nature in Colorado, then found his niche at a progressive boarding school in Vermont.

Wednesday June 2

Dan Gutman - The Talent Show
10:30 a.m. After a tornado destroys the town, the community decides to put on a talent show to raise money. Talent is scarce except for one local star, provided she can get there on time. Then another tornado hits, leaving the kids to save the show. (Ages 8-10)

T.H. Breen - American Insurgents, American Patriots
7 p.m. Some two years before the Declaration of Independence, organized groups of farmers and tradesmen resisted British domination. Breen’s revisionist history presents the American Revolution as a grassroots movement rather than the inspiration of a landed elite of Founding Fathers.

Thursday June 3

Matt Gallagher - Kaboom
7 p.m. Gallagher, an Army lieutenant who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, began a blog shortly after his deployment. Intended for his friends and relatives, the postings - chronicling the daily experiences of his platoon, code-named The Gravediggers - drew the attention of the Army, which shut it down in June 2008.

Friday June 4

Sasha Polakow-Suransky - The Unspoken Alliance
7 p.m. Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories in 1967 ruptured its relations with many of its earlier allies. In this detailed history based on archival research and interviews with high-level military figures in Israel and South Africa, Polakow-Suransky, senior editor at Foreign Affairs, reveals the many ties--including extensive arms deals--Israel formed with the apartheid state.

Our last story time for the season will be on Memorial Day, May 31 at 10:30 a.m.  Story time will resume in the fall on Monday, September 13 at 10:30 a.m. 

But there are still lots of reasons to visit us. Take advantage of the Member Sale the first weekend of June.
