LETTER FROM BARBARA & CARLA |
We send warm greetings to all our customers! This past week six of our booksellers flew to San Jose, California for an annual American Booksellers three-day workshop called the Winter Institute. This week, in our weekly email, we were planning to report back to our customers about all the fresh news about books and the publishing world coming from the Winter Institute, but a real winter got in the way: our booksellers, who were mostly due back on Saturday, were stranded in San Jose because of the snow here. As of this letter (Tuesday night), two are still pacing the runway waiting to return on re-booked flights. It's been a week of constant shifts in our events and the hours that we are open. As long as the snow is with us, please check our web page often for updates about author talks and store hours, and next week we will be sending you a storm-delayed report on the Winter Institute. BOOK NOTES What is Winter Institute? It is run by the trade association for independent bookstores around the country - the American Booksellers Association. A large portion is an attempt to forecast the future of the bookselling business and an educational opportunity for booksellers and bookstore owners. But to be honest, the best part of the gathering is what happens outside the meetings. We get to meet our fellow booksellers from all over the country. We get to visit bookstores (in San Jose, Menlo Park, and San Francisco) to gain perspective and new ideas. And we have the opportunity to learn about exciting new books from publishing representatives and from the authors themselves. If you like attending our events, imagine what it's like to meet a whole roomful of authors! You'll be hearing from us about many of these new books as they are released - but I am currently most excited about four . . . . - Andrew Getman |

Are you a mushy romantic inclined to give TOMIES LITTLE BOOK OF LOVE (Putnam, $7.99) by Tomie DePaola or the classic I LIKE YOU (Houghton Mifflin, 6.95) by Sandol Warburg? Or are you a pragmatic Valentine who prefers to express your sentiments for your little one with I LOVE YOU WHEN YOU WHINE (FSG, $15.00) by Emily Jenkins. However you say I love you, the children and teens department has a large display of Valentines Day books and packs of cards suitable for classroom giving.

Sarah Susanka is almost synonymous with the not so big house. In THE NOT SO BIG LIFE: Making Room for What Really Matters, the architect and author concentrates on what goes on between the well-proportioned and uncluttered walls. Some of Susankas suggestions include: slow down, consider what really matters, and make time for it - advice she bolsters with exercises and anecdotes. Available in hardcover, $5.98. New artist in the Coffeehouse: Halcy BohenDespite the chill outside, the walls of the coffeehouse will rollick with warmth and action through February and March as they are filled with Halcy Bohen's paintings and drawings of dancers, musicians, chefs, and food. The show, called Eat, Play, Dance! displays Bohen's range of styles and media, including oil, ink, watercolor, and acrylics. Describing her work as "filled with lightness and movement, fluid lines and color," critics praise her use of "the slightest line and action to capture the subject, revealing the essence of the being itself." Halcy's work has been juried into shows at the Smithsonian, the Yellow Barn Gallery and the Caladan Gallery. She has also exhibited locally at the American Painting Gallery, the Watergate Gallery, the Bethesda Library and the Starfish Cafe. Her affinity for art is allied to her career as a psychologis
