Groundbreaking

A Celebration of Community

Ferncliff Village

The Ferncliff Groundbreaking held on June 3rd was a delightful event with a special recognition of long-time supporter Lois Curtis who donated the 6 acres of land for the project.

Ken Balizer, HRB Executive Director quoted the saying:

"If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly, our whole life would change."

View the video of recognition of Lois and our community.

BY SEA BY LAND Challenge

Steve Rhoades, sports enthusiast and coach is taking up the challenge of affordable housing.  HRB helped find Steve housing through our HomeShare program, now he is giving back.

In the BY SEA BY LAND Challenge on July 5th, Steve will be doing something extraordinary to bring attention to the need for housing that is affordable.

He will circumnavigate the island on his paddleboard (a total of 28 miles), and then he will get on his bike and ride the Chilly Hilly course (33 miles with 2,675 feet of overall climbing).  All in one day, all for one cause; and you can be part of it.  Steve is doing the hard work -- the way we can help him is to:

Steve is our hero - and so are you.  Your mission -- if you choose to accept it - is to go to our blogsite www.ahousinghero.org and make a donation to support Steve by supporting HRB.  Then make sure to tell others.

If you see Steve training, you can post or tweet @ ahousinghero.org.  Let your friends know that by donating to HRB for this challenge they will be entered to win exciting prizes like

So join in and together we'll go the distance to meet the challenge of housing for all on Bainbridge Island.

Ferncliff Village is moving forward!
Bainbridge Island's first sustainable, community land trust development is under construction!
Ferncliff VillageIf you've driven down Ferncliff lately, it's hard to miss the action taking place on the Ferncliff Village site.  Read more in a recent report provided to the Bainbridge Island City Council.

Central Highland Builders has started the site work this past month that will provide the infrastructure for phase one which will consist of 24 individual homes.  Construction on the new homes will begin in August or September.

Interest is high and growing!
Pass the word! With prices starting under $200,000, there have been many people who are interested in the new homes at Ferncliff Village.  Currently we have about half of the houses under application. But there is still lots of time to participate.

If you or someone you know may be interested in homeownership at Ferncliff Village, have them contact Phedra Elliott.  Attend a Homebuyer Orientation to learn more about purchasing a community land trust home.

We have Homebuyer Orientations scheduled just about every week.

Intern joins HRB for Summer Internship

Aaron Covert

Aaron Covert has hit the ground running as our summer intern.  Aaron is a junior at Bainbridge High School and is helping HRB with several projects including the BY SEA BY LAND campaign, our annual report, and the Ferncliff Village project. "I really like how HRB helps people by providing housing that is affordable, and it's a great staff to work with too."

Next time you're in the office, make sure to say hi.  It's great to have Aaron on the HRB team!
