HRB celebrates Earth Day withHRB celebrates Earthday
 sustainable housing

Greetings!,

Mother earth is our home, and there is no better day to recognize that than on Earth Day. Housing provided by HRB embodies green practices at many levels. This coming weekend HRB will celebrate the importance of housing with two events:

Visit us at the Earth Day Event at T&C

Saturday, April 16th from 11 to 3 pm
Town & Country Market
We'll have information about our new innovative Ferncliff Village project that is scheduled to break ground later this spring. The first phase will provide 24 new homes that will be sold under market value to moderate and low income buyers.

Sparrow's Open House
Sparrow Homes
Sunday, April 17 from 1 to 3 pm
194 Knechtel Way NE
The Sparrow Community Land Trust Homes showcase environmental cutting edge green building techniques.  Designed by Mithun Architects and Hybrid Architecture, the two homes are for sale to moderate to low income qualified buyers.  The Open House is open to the public and is a great opportunity to see what the future of affordable, sustainable housing looks like.

The work that HRB embraces in providing opportunities for diverse housing helps our environment, our economy and our social capital. And when you think about it, you can't get much more sustainable than that!

Happy Earth Day,
Wendy Johnson

Ferncliff Village Capital Campaign Gala
A Night of Magic at IslandWood

Friday, May 6th

6:30 to 9:30 pm

IslandWood

Join us for a Night of Magic with all proceeds going to support Ferncliff Village, Bainbridge Island's first sustainable community land trust housing development, scheduled to break ground in May.

The capital campaign "Focus on Ferncliff" which was launched last November has been tremendously successful thus far.  We have raised $200,000 of our $250,000 goal.  The Gala on May 6 will help us celebrate our success and meet our ultimate goal.

The Night of Magic will feature nationally acclaimed magician Joey Pipia and will include casual fair and hosted beer and wine bar.  Ferncliff Village becoming a reality has been truly magical because of the support from so many people in the community.

Purchase tickets online or to make reservations by phone call (206)842.0849. Look for an email update on the progress of Ferncliff Village in May.
HomeShare, the ultimate in sustainability
HRB program growsHomeShare

HomeShare is a service HRB provides for homeowners to rent rooms or accessory dwelling units to neighbors who are in need of a place to live.  It's a win-win situation that has proved to be extremely successful.

HomeShare is the ultimate in sustainability.  Last week a woman who was commuting from Port Townsend was matched with a Home provider who needed extra help around the house. Now instead of driving 2 hours a day she is driving 20 minutes a day and we didn't have to build anything!

This year alone HRB has made twice as many matches as this time last year.  Working with Penny Lamping makes it easy on the homeowner who doesn't have to do any interviewing or background checks, which are all done by HRB.  For more information contact Penny Lamping at HRB.
Volunteers with heart

Volunteers help make HRB hum

We've had some incredible help this past couple months from some amazing volunteers.  Especially noteworthy is Sal Morgan for coming on as our interim volunteer coordinator.  With her assistance we set up our first database of volunteers and were able to reach out in new ways for volunteer involvement.

Because of Sal's efforts we've made connections with volunteers that have had a huge impact on HRB:

  • Megan who owns "Handy Woman" cleaning has provided much needed cleaning services for HRB - and all with organic green supplies.
  • A new intern is scheduled to start in May who is earning her masters in planning and will help with the Ferncliff Village project.
  • A long time supporter has resurfaced, Aileen Griffey and has invested her high caliber professional coordination in generating an application for an Americorp VISTA volunteer.
  • Linda Campbell of Campbell Design has generously stepped in, yet again, to help with graphic design work.

Another group to give a grateful shout out to is Hyla Middle School.  As part of their physical education program, Hyla students have been working every Monday at Island Terrace this past semester pulling ivy and weeds. It's a great way to get a workout -- and we are so grateful for their energy and help.

Our thanks and appreciation go out to these and all of our volunteers who put their heart and hard work into creating and sustaining inclusive housing for Bainbridge Island.
