Rise & Shine Poster Gains in Popularity
This year's iconic poster represents the theme of the event, showing how each of us is a small part of the larger community.
Housing Resources Board Events
The poster consists of a montage of over 1,000 small pictures that create a larger picture of our community.

The poster also illustrates the many parts to HRB, created to help meet the many needs of housing on Bainbridge Island.

Greetings from New HRB Executive Director

Greetings!,
Ken BalizerAs the new executive director of HRB, I'd like to introduce myself and share a little about my background.

As City Planning Director of Albuquerque, NM, a city of 500,000, I focused on neighborhood planning, preservation, a citywide bike and walking trails system, affordable housing and advocated for measures
to reduce sprawl. I was also executive director of Sawmill Community Land Trust, one of the largest contiguous community land trusts in the country.

I recently relocated to Bainbridge Island in order to work with HRB.  With a daughter and grandkids in Seattle, this move feels like I'm coming home.  I accepted this position in part because I admire HRB for the work it has done., and, I believe it has created a worthy challenge for the Bainbridge Island community: to maintain a place on the Island for low and moderate income working people to call home.

This is a challenge that the whole Island needs to get behind.  I personally invite you to attend "Rise & Shine," our first annual fundraising breakfast which will showcase the value of HRB's work in the community.

Hope to see you there,
Ken Balizer, HRB Executive Director

Rise & Shine HRB Fundraising BreakfastHRB Fundraising Breakfast
Wed., June 23rd
7:30 am
Bainbridge High School

The event is HRB's way of celebrating what it means to call Bainbridge Island "home."

The program will feature two videos produced by Hollywood film editor Brian Berdan and local videographer Sandy Schubach with editing by Harrison Berdan.  One of the short programs will showcase the story of a family of six that, due to unexpected job loss, was able to stay in the community and thrive here because of HRB.  The other video will feature a group of Hyla students who decided to make a difference and in the process, changed the lives of three families for the better. Island Music Center will also be featured with a small children's choir singing their local version of "This Land Is Your Land."

The event is free, thanks to the many contributions from corporate sponsors.  But bring your checkbooks. The money raised will to go to help change lives for the better, right now, right here on Bainbridge Island.

Reservations are required.  RSVP on HRB website or call HRB at 842-1909.
Artist's Quilt to be Unveiled
"Our Island Neighborhood" quilt by Kerry SmithRise & Shine event will kick off year-long raffle of quilt with proceeds going to HRB

Kerry Smith learned about HRB through a friend.  She heard the stories of neighbors who have been helped with housing through HRB.  She wanted to help too, so she started sewing.  The result:  an  artistic quilt titled "Our Island Neighborhood" that showcases a collection of wonderful whimsical diverse homes.

An amazing piece of art, the quilt is valued at more than $1,500 and represents 120 hours of work.  Kerry has been involved with fiber arts her entire career, which includes being editor-in-chief of internationally recognized sewing publications.  All of us have something unique that we can contribute to help build community through housing, Kerry is an inspiration, as she contributed according to her personal talents and abilities.

The quilt will be on display for the first time at the upcoming Rise & Shine Breakfast event.  Raffle tickets are $5.  To learn more, call HRB at 842.1909.
