Change of Seasons, We Need Your Voice
Greetings!,
Here we are approaching the beautiful Spring season: flowers are in bloom, birds are singing and neighbors are coming out of their hibernation. For me, spring always carries with it the connotation of growth and expansion. So it is a perfect time for the new Executive Director, Ken Balizer, to join us. Ken will be starting in the first week of May and will be a great asset for HRB as we continue down the path of preserving the diversity and vitality of Bainbridge Island by providing affordable housing opportunities. I will be staying on as the Associate Director and am looking forward to an exciting time in HRB's history. As we expand our staff with a new Executive Director, you can help HRB expand our mission. Through a survey conducted by Kitsap County for their Consolidated Plan, your input can help keep affordable housing a priority. This survey will help determine priority programs for federal block grants. The more people state that affordable housing is a priority, the higher the percentage of funding it will receive. Please take a few minutes to respond to the survey--your input is very important! Simply click here to start the survey and support affordable community housing. Spring is Here...
|
| ...and so is the Community Garden at Island Terrace!
Last year, with the help of several community members including Althea Godfrey and Debbi Lester, HRB property Island Terrace installed a new community garden. Now the garden is growing, as are the number of residents who are participating. This year Master Gardener Deb Fenwick has added her knowledge and support to the project which also includes a new childrens' garden. If you have a green thumb, they are looking for master gardeners to come Sunday afternoons to help provide garden advice. Or, if you just appreciate seeing community gardens grow you can contribute to the effort. To make sure your donation goes specifically to this project click here, then under "program designation" select Island Terrace Garden. For more information or to volunteer on the Island Terrace Community Garden call Marta Holt at (360) 860.1268. |

Sparrow Homes Update
|
| Sparrow homes scheduled to be available for rent this summer
The Sparrow homes are in the final stages of gaining City approval to be moved to their new location on Knechtel.
Once the approval is secured work can begin to prepare the site. The modular homes will then be moved by truck and lifted into place by crane. The projected timeline is to have the homes in place and available for rent later this summer.

| Meet Lucy
More people are choosing to stay in their homes as they get older, but this is not easy. One of the people HRB was able to help stay in her home in 2009 was a very independent Lucy Johnson.
Lucy leads an active and interesting life and will soon celebrate her 84th birthday. After working many years for an attorney in Port Townsend, Lucy moved to Bainbridge in 1968. She managed construction of her home on her Bainbridge property. In 1970 she and Einar Johnson were married. He was a descendent of the first Swedish settlers on the island. Einar died in 1979. Lucy is a devoted member of Seabold Church where she taught Sunday school, and has been very content residing in her "summer cabin" at Crystal Springs since her retirement in 1988.
With age, however, some problems arose. Her traditional bathroom tub was not very accessible, the entry stairs were a concern, and fire safety needed to be improved. Resources were not available; a fixed income does not allow for necessary improvements. Friends referred Lucy to HRB. HRB made a complete safety assessment, proposed changes and hired a contractor. Senior volunteers assisted with reorganizing overcrowded spaces. The transformation was remarkable.
Lucy's favorite memory of Bainbridge is walking to Point White with Einar. Thanks to HRB those memories still hold their place as she continues to call Bainbridge Island her home.
