Francis Jacobson helps launch office support for HRB
Francis Jacobson has joined the HRB team as a regular volunteer providing office support, research and writing. You'll find him manning the phones on Mondays and Wednesdays as he works on other projects. His support has had such a positive impact on our operations that we are recruiting additional "office" volunteers. Jacobson's civic interest in HRB stems from the realization that none of us are immune from the financial challenges that might require support from HRB. Jacobson explains that "the concept that 'it can happen to anyone' is something I've known for years. I personally know people who were once prosperous who found themselves in need. When I read about an HRB client whose circumstances matched those I knew, the message was brought home." Read more about Francis on our website. Here at HRB, we work with our volunteers to ensure that their experience is as beneficial to them as it is to the organization. We tailor the projects to the strengths and interests of the volunteer. For Francis, HRB is fortunate to benefit from his interest and aptitude for writing (read his story on HomeShare on our website, and also the story on Phedra Elliott in this newsletter). Through all his volunteer work for HRB Francis is helping to build community and sustain Bainbridge through diverse, community focused housing. And besides . . . he has a great telephone voice. Whether it's office work, event coordination, writing, photography or a number of other skills, HRB needs you. Welcome to 2010. Message from HRB Chair
Greetings!,
Happy New Year! Welcome to 2010. Here's wishing you an exciting year! I'm glad to begin the year as Chair of the HRB. Come join us as we enter our third decade continuing our mission, preserving the diversity and vitality of Bainbridge Island by providing and maintaining affordable housing opportunities in the community. Like so many others I stop to 'browse" the Realtors windows to see the listings -always fun to see what's "out there." As home prices rose over the years, I was alarmed to see the words "Affordable Housing" applied to $500,000 homes, nearly four times what we paid for our house in 1993! I became involved in HRB for two reasons: I want to help friends and neighbors stay in this wonderful community (lucky to be here myself). These are people I love to see on a day-to-day basis. I am always amazed by the ways in which people involve themselves in, and add to, our community, making Bainbridge such a great place to live. Secondly, I enjoy working with the community, and the HRB staff and Board, sharing in the challenge to find ways to continue our mission. It takes imagination and perseverance. There's no shortage of that in this community. It is exciting to be a part of. I invite you to come join us in any way you can. It's very rewarding, this kind of preservation - it helps to make the world a smaller place. Visit our website. See how you might help, or how we might help you! See you around the Island! Dave Cinamon, HRB Chair

HRB has new client services manager
In December Joan Marsden retired from HRB after two years as our client services manager. Joan was an enthusiastic HRB supporter who also served as an HRB boardmember and volunteer. We wish her well as she embarks on her next adventures and extend our sincere appreciation for all her contributions to HRB and our mission. We're confident that Joan's impact on HRB will continue into the future. As we say goodbye to Joan, we are fortunate to welcome her replacement Phedra Elliott. Phedra Elliott comes to HRB after two years working for the City of Bremerton administering the Community Development Block Grant. She currently lives in Indianola with her husband. She chose to come to HRB to work specifically for Community Land Trusts and to work directly with the clients of such services. Phedra's previous professional background and residency is quite varied. She is a native of the town of Longview, Texas. She majored in education at the University of Texas and taught school in the town of Bastrop. She and her husband came out to the Northwest on a visit, loved the area and moved in 2001. Her first position in Seattle was handling employee benefits for Washington Mutual. Needless to say, Phedra comes to us with a background that encompasses both people skills in teaching and complex administrative work regarding the needs of people, employee benefits, and housing issues. So we will be well-served. |
