Bainbridge Island -- A Place to Call Home Greetings!,
As we all are aware, calling a place your home means more than the fact that you occupy space within a building. Calling a place "home" means that you have a sense of belonging, a sense of security, a sense that you are connected. All of these lead one to a sense of well-being. That is what makes a house a home. Here at HRB we recognize the importance of having a place you can make your home. It may be an apartment, an ADU, a house, or a portion of a house...but it is a safe, secure, and affordable place. We know that we can't make people feel at home. But it is our goal to provide them with housing that allows them the opportunity to make themselves a home. The more we can help our neighbors feel at home, the better this home will be for all of us! Carl Florea, Executive Director

20th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 3rd at 1 pm at Winslow Green
HRB will be hosting an all-Island party on October 3rd in celebration of our 20th anniversary. Everyone is welcome! Hosted by John Ellis with music by Tami Allen and "Whozyamama", there will be all kinds of activities for young and old. One way we're engaging the community for this event and throughout the month of October is with our booklet that explores our Island character, "20 Things About Our Island Home." . This booklet is a way for us to get the Island talking about and celebrating our local character. The unique things about Bainbridge can be quirky and also heartwarming. You can find the booklet throughout the island, at all HRB events, on our website. So join the conversation -- let us know what 20 things YOU love about our Island. We'll be sharing the "20 Things" on our website--check back to learn more about our Island character! This is our way of appreciating this place we call home -- Bainbridge Island. |
Ed's Gift

Ed Kushner received first Birkenfeld Humanitarian Award
Few people know that there were only three original founders of HRB; the late Janet West (past Mayor of Bainbridge Island), Joan Holcomb (past Executive Director of Helpline House) and Ed Kushner. Ed is an energetic, collaborative and quiet leader. He is painfully uncomfortable with formal recognition of his efforts because he is so keenly aware of everyone else who has helped alongside him.
Regardless -- when honored with the first Birkenfeld Humanitarian Award last week, Ed braced himself for the accolades for one reason: as the recipient, Ed had the opportunity to designate $25,000 to a local nonprofit. He seized the opportunity and provided $5,000 to five organizations that have been especially meaningful to Ed, HRB being one of them.
As we celebrate our 20-year anniversary, we are indebted to Ed for this most recent gift. But also we are indebted to him for his tireless support of our mission, his leadership and, perhaps most importantly, his vision of a community that cares about each other. After all, HRB wouldn't be here without Ed.

HRB is Recipient of Green Housing for Farm
|
|
Opportunity to support local famers HRB has been working in partnership with the Trust for Working Landscapes, (TWL), to provide innovative housing for working farmers. Dale Sperling, former CEO of Unico Properties of Seattle, is donating to HRB two high-tech housing modules used as display models for Unico's homes of the future.
In October these units will make their way from their current home on top of Rainier Plaza in downtown Seattle to the Suyematsu Farm on Day Road. These units feature several green amenities including energy efficient appliances, lighting, and heating and even a living roof.
The Bainbridge Island City Council has approved a lease with HRB to place the units on the city-owned farmland. The cost of moving the units is made possible by a recoverable grant from the Bainbridge Community Foundation's new Housing Action Fund. This is the first time this fund will be used, which is intended to support affordable housing efforts on the island The grant is intended to provide temporary financing until permanent financing can be arranged. This project is a perfect example of a win / win / win situation, with HRB, TWL, and the City all being able to further their goals through this cooperative effort.
