"A general is just as good or just as bad as the troops under his command make him."

The troops can overcome a bad general - and a good general makes sure of it.

Our Tip of the Month
We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays one of your most valuable assets. The best way we know to help you with that is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don't know that could save you thousands of dollars.

Plug

Interior Electrical Outlets

Electrical outlets can be very dangerous resulting in fire or electrical shock.

To test your electrical outlets, you'll need a three-prong electrical outlet tester. These look like three-prong plugs with three little lights. These can be found at most any hardware store for only $10 or $15. Go room by room through the entire house, checking as many electrical outlets as possible. Ideally, you want to check every outlet.

Before touching any outlet, look to make sure that it is not physically damaged. Replace any outlet that is cracked or broken. With the rest of the outlets, take your electrical tester and plug it in.

The most common fault is a condition called reversed polarity. Reversed polarity means that the black wire and the white wire are reversed where they are connected to the outlet. Appliances plugged into an outlet with reversed polarity will still work, but there is a much greater risk of electrocution.

Hidden Carcinogens: UV Light

We've known for a long time that different types of ultraviolet light - mainly the ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation produced by the sun and indoor tanning beds - are likely carcinogens.

Exposure to UV light causes cell damage that will increase the risk for skin cancer, including melanoma, as well as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The more exposure, the greater the risk.

To protect yourself: Avoid the use of any tanning equipment, as well as excessive sun exposure. When possible, wear a hat outdoors, or other protective clothing. Also apply SPF 15 or higher sunscreen before going outdoors for extended periods. - Christopher J. Portier, PhD

February 2nd is Groundhog Day

Groundhog

Groundhog Day is a holiday celebrated in United Stat

es and Canada on February 2. In weather lore, if a ground

hog (a.k.a. woodchuck, marmot, or ground squirrel) emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If on the other hand, it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for 6 more weeks.

Candlemas is usually the same day, and has similar beliefs about the coming weather.

Perhaps the earliest known American reference to Groundhog Day can be found at the Historical Society of Berks County in Reading, Pennsylvania. The reference was made February 4, 1841 in Morgantown, PA storekeeper James Morris' diary:

"Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."

Combustible Insulation

Pink InsulationThe most common type of exposed combustible insulation found in houses is polystyrene -- the white plastic insulation commonly used to make disposable coffee cups. Insulation comes in one-quarter inch to four-inch thick sheets. It is often exposed in basements, crawl spaces and garages. If you find this insulation in your home, cover it with drywall to protect it from fire and reduce flame spread if it does burn.

If polystyrene insulation has been glued to the inside of your garage door, there's no way to adequately protect it just simply remove it.
