Mould Inspections

Mould can grow inside your home behind walls and underneath flooring without you even being aware of it.  Even though mould is a natural occurring fungi, it can have marked health effects on many people in large concentrations and depending on the type of mould.

New and older buildings can have indoor mould growth issues.  The age of the home or office has little bearing on whether there could be a mould growth issue or even a mould infestation.  If there have been any water intrusion issues, excessive condensation or elevated humidity levels inside the home or office, there could be mould.  Unfortunately, odor is not a good indicator of the severity or potential of the indoor mould growth problem.  Buildings can have a strong musty odor and a very small area of mould growth, or no odor at all and a very significant mould problem.

There are many mould species that can cause a variety of symptoms such as skin rashes, nose bleeds, itchy and watery eyes, breathing difficulties, migraine headaches, just to name a few.  Some indoor moulds are extremely toxic and can cause long lasting illnesses and disease.

How does mold grow?

Mold needs moisture in the form of a water leak, even high relative humidity, together with a nutrient source (drywall, carpeting, dust) to grow.  If you have had a roof leak, basement leak, condensation on windows, even an overflow of a sink that was not cleaned up properly within 24 hours of its occurrence, you could have mold growth.

Indoor mold can be detected through air samples, bulk samples and swabs that are sent to a laboratory for culturing and identification.  Most importantly, a proper air quality assessment using instrumentation is also required.  This will provide you with important information on the location and potential for hidden mould growth issues as well as the cause of the problem.  An indoor mould investigation will often tell you the species of mould, whether it's toxic and how much of it is in your home.  Most importantly it will be able to guide you in getting rid of your mould problem.

A home or office does not have to have visible evidence of mould growth for there to be a potential toxic mould issue. This is why it is important to have a proper mould assessment done to determine if you have a mould growth issue and where.

Hidden Carcinogens: UV Light
Palm Tree & SunWe've known for a long time that different types of ultraviolet light - mainly the ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation produced by the sun and indoor tanning beds - are likely carcinogens.

Exposure to UV light causes cell damage that will increase the risk for skin cancer, including melanoma, as well as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The more exposure, the greater the risk.

To protect yourself: Avoid the use of any tanning equipment, as well as excessive sun exposure. When possible, wear a hat outdoors, or other protective clothing. Also apply SPF 15 or higher sunscreen before going outdoors for extended periods. - Christopher J. Portier, PhD
February 2nd is Groundhog Day
GroundhogGroundhog Day is a holiday celebrated in United States and Canada on February 2.

In weather lore, if a groundhog (a.k.a. woodchuck, marmot, or ground squirrel) emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If on the other hand, it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for 6 more weeks.

Candlemas is usually the same day, and has similar beliefs about the coming weather.

Perhaps the earliest known American reference to Groundhog Day can be found at the Historical Society of Berks County in Reading, Pennsylvania. The reference was made February 4, 1841 in Morgantown, PA storekeeper James Morris' diary:

"Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."

Pink Insulation

Combustible Insulation

The most common type of exposed combustible insulation found in houses is polystyrene -- the white plastic insulation commonly used to make disposable coffee cups. Insulation comes in one-quarter inch to four-inch thick sheets. It is often exposed in basements, crawl spaces and garages. If you find this insulation in your home, cover it with drywall to protect it from fire and reduce flame spread if it does burn.

If polystyrene insulation has been glued to the inside of your garage door, there's no way to adequately protect it just simply remove it.
Recognizing fatigue for what it is.

Fighting fatigue is a concept of success-oriented people that actually makes them fatigue-prone. Fatigue is symptom the purpose of which is to

get your attention-to tell you there's something wrong with the way you live. The main cause of fatigue is a monolithic lifestyle, in which the rational

sense is used to the exclusion of the other senses, movement, and the emotions. To beat fatigue, you have to get your life back in balance.

What Is Fatigue?

The tiredness we feel after jogging for instance, is not fatigue. Fatigue is an absence of energy, joie de vivre, interest... It's a blunting of sensation,

a shutting out of stimuli.

Behavioral clues:

Ø  Difficulty in getting going or persevering.

Ø  Not having the energy to do things you know you enjoy.

Ø  Having trouble waking up or getting to sleep.

Ø  Taking too many naps.

Most Vulnerable

People who:

Ø  Do virtually the same thing all day, every day. The classic case is the executive who spends his work hours

hunched over a desk, grabs a sandwich at lunch, takes a break only to talk to co-workers about business, and goes home to a set routine with his

family each evening.

Ø  Have lifestyles contrary to their natural inclinations. Each of us has a rhythm of activity with which we are most comfortable. If a natural doer is forced to lie on a beach in the Bahamas for two weeks, he'll come back exhausted.
