Our Tip of the Month
We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays one of your most valuable assets. The best way we know to help you with that is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don't know that could save you thousands of dollars.
DISPOSAL
Most problems with your disposal unit happen because they jam or rust builds up inside. If your disposal suddenly stops and emits a low humming sound, a bone, bottle cap or some other hard object has probably been lodged in it. Removing such objects can be dangerous, if your not sure what to do call a plumber. If you have the jam wrench that came with the disposal system you can turn the system off then use the wrench to back up the rotor from underneath. |

The Ancient New Year
The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible crescent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring).
The Babylonian new year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison.
The Romans continued to observe the New Year in late March, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors, such that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.
In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the New Year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the New Year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.
Traditions of the season include the making of New Year's resolutions. That tradition also dates back to the early Babylonians. The early Babylonian's most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.

Stay Active to Be Happy and Have More Energy
It's cold outside, you've barely recovered from the holidays, and a lot of people have the sniffles. You might not feel like working out, but it's just what you should do now, according to new federal research.
They say one week without exercise increases fatigue by up to 20 percent. After two weeks, their study subjects started to show signs of depression.
If you can't make yourself go to the gym, do a lower-intensity routine in your living room. After a few sessions, you'll feel more like working out. |

Grandmas And Grandpas
"Grand Blogger"
Discovering the Internet at the age of ninety-five took twenty years off her life, said Maria Amelia Lopez, a great-grandmother from Spain. Her grandson Daniel created a blog site for her as a birthday present. Maria's blog went on to attract more than 1.7 million hits worldwide. On her site, Maria shared her thoughts on such subjects from the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco to the Iraq War to life with her grandchildren. "My bloggers are the joy of my life," she said. "I did not know there was so much goodness in the world. |
