Our Tip of the Month
We enjoy trying to make sure that your home stays one of your most valuable assets. The best way we know to help you with that is to pass along some simple maintenance tips that most people don't know that could save you thousands of dollars.
WATER HAMMER
Sometimes we are asked, "why are my plumbing pipes so noisy?" The noise they are usually referring to is known as the water hammer. Water hammer noise is usually caused when a rapid flow of water is suddenly halted. It happens frequently when a faucet is turned off by hand or by an appliance, such as an automatic washing machine. The best way to stop this noise is to install air chambers in the lines, which will act as cushions for the water. Your plumbing system may already have air chambers which have filled with water, and all you have to do is drain the system to let the air back in, then refill the system with water. |

Origins of Christmas
|
From the Old English 'Cristes Męsse' ~ meaning the 'mass of Christ' ~ the story of Christmas begins with the birth of a babe in Bethlehem.
It is believed that Christ was born on the 25th, although the exact month is unknown. December was likely chosen so the Catholic Church could compete with rival pagan rituals held at that time of year and because of its closeness with the winter solstice in the Northern hemisphere, a traditional time of celebration among many ancient cultures. |
Luke, Chapter Two And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, "Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Healthy Eating Guide to Cereal By Lilian Presti
Cereal is an American breakfast classic that many of us grew up on. Because it's so easy to prepare and most kids love it, today's parents continue to buy cereal week after week, hoping to keep breakfast time stress-free and to get some nourishment into their children. But depending upon which cereals you choose, you may not be getting exactly what you think you're getting.
These days, buying breakfast cereals can be confusing. Many carry healthy labels or promote some health benefit even if they aren't the best choice for health. Because of this deceiving labeling, many parents can fall into the trap of buying something they think is healthy but which really isn't.
To ensure that you're buying a healthy product for your family, read labels and look for the following cues from www.NaturallySavvy.com:
High Fiber. A cereal should ideally contain at least 15 percent fiber per serving size, or a minimum of 5 grams to 6 grams of fiber per 30-gram serving. Some very high-fiber cereals would have over 6 grams of fiber per 30-gram serving.
Whole Grains. Whole grains mean that the cereal hasn't been made with refined grains. Not only do refined grains not have much nutritional value left, but they also contain virtually no fiber. To add insult to injury, these refined grains also raise blood sugar levels quickly, which leads to a host of health problems, such as unstable energy levels, insulin resistance and weight gain.
Few Ingredients. Healthier cereals normally contain fewer ingredients on the label. If your cereal has many ingredients listed on the packaging - and any that you can't pronounce - put it down and look for a better choice. |

Christmas Tree Tonic
With Christmas just a couple weeks away, many folks will be out buying Christmas trees this weekend. But, how do you keep your Christmas tree from drying out before St. Nick comes down the chimney?
An architect from Eugene, Oregon may have come up with a "vodka" tonic that could keep your tree as fresh as the day it was chopped down.
"So I figured, let's try adding vodka to the bottom of the tree," said Ken Nagao.
Actually, some experts believe that adding a splash of vodka to the tree water will keep your branches shiny and spruced up.
"If you actually think about it, it might actually work," said John Miller, of Adams Nurseries in Tonawanda.
"The only thing I can think it might do is break the sap up so it doesn't seal up so it can keep drinking water," Miller said.
Experts also recommend adding a tree preservative to the water.
"I would actually say this is more important than putting in vodka," Miller said.
The architect from Oregon used both, and plenty of water. His tree made it until Valentine's Day.
2 On Your Side put the tonic to the test in 2004. We bought our tree on December 4th and it lasted through most of January.
If you'd like to try it yourself, just use the following ingredients:
- lots of water
- a splash of vodka every time you fill your stand
- tree preservative, preferably "Prolong"
