| School Days | | One evening, my teenage daughter, Paige, and I were out shopping when she decided to make a purchase. She greeted the cashier with only a "Hi," then proceeded to dig nervously in her wallet. She was having obvious trouble counting out the correct bills and change. But rather than help, the cashier simply stood and watched while Paige fumbled and mumbled her way to the corect amount. Finally, the transaction was completed.

I would define success as a series of mistakes, small steps, accomplishments, detours, roadblocks, dreams, and persistence that eventually deliver us to a desired goal.

| Learn Small Talk to Make Business or Personal Connections |
 Given the ingrained reluctance of humans to talk to strangers, it seems that having the will to do so is the first step in starting a conversation. Having accomplished that, making eye contact before speaking is next. If one person avoids you, it could be best to move onto someone else. At a meeting, industry show or seminar, there are plenty of people who will talk to you. Start with something you obviously have in common, like commenting on the Danish or doughnuts offered before a meeting. Don't say anything negative. After that, you could move on to ask whether the subject is from the area or drove in. Smile even if the subject doesn't smile back. Make the person feel comfortable. In his book Turn Small Talk into Big Deals, Don Gabor recommends targeting the person's interests. Listen for a keyword that will tip you off and guide the conversation in that direction.
Try to discover what the subject needs that could be related to what you want to discuss. Ask open-ended questions and listen carefully to discover a way that you or your company could be of help. Don't suggest anything yet, just consider how you could help.
At the end of your conversation, shift back to something you have in common. This should be entirely unrelated to any possible business or personal connection you would like to make.

Foundation Cracks
Most houses have cracks of some kind, however a hairline fracture in the slab is normally of no structural significance, however cracking in the foundation wall is more important.
While a stair-step crack is less important than a vertical crack either one with an opening of 1/8" to 1/4" may be cause for concern, of course smaller cracks may also be a concern depending on the circumstances.
The key to load bearing wall cracks is to insure that there is no further movement. To do this you should fill in the crack and then over a period of 6 to 12 months check for reappearances or separation between the filling and the wall.
If there's is additional movement then it would be advised that you call a specialist. It may be anything from a simple matter regarding the property or something as expensive as underpinning the foundation.
Remember, cracks frequently appear around windows and door frames which are places of inherent weakness. |
